The Surfrider Hotel Malibu, Los Angeles

The room was very small and noisy. Despite double pane windows, the traffic on the main road was overwhelming.

The property is pleasant enough. It’s clean minus the ants and has a nice California beach vibe. Our room was right off the parking lot so we had a lot of noise beyond just the highway. The roof deck is what makes the hotel.

It’s priced like a luxury hotel and delivers a comfortable place to stay in a good location. To be clear, the staff is really great, friendly and helpful. The hotel is just way overpriced for what it is. If you didn’t feel gauged by the price you would be extremely happy. 600+ a night for a ground floor double room is laughable. Thus the price to be in Malibu. I was there for work and wanted to be close to the venue so I didn’t have to rent a car. I should have rented a car and stayed further away. You’re charged with an amenities fee for their beach gear they have available, and they also charge you a 3% bed linens fee. One would think 600 a night could cover your linens and the beach gear. Ask for a damage deposit rather than asking your customer to pay for your beach chairs and surf boards.

The property is absolutely beautiful and the location is great. An easy walk to both the pier and Malibu Country Mart. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

The rooms are extremely small and get a lot of noise from the road. The space does not have a closet or anywhere to put your luggage which adds to the cramped feeling. Bugs were also a bit of an issue during our stay, we had several spiders, ants and beetles in the room. We were also a little confused at checkout when we were charged a $115 “amenity fee”, not sure what this fee was for/covered. There aren’t many amenities at this hotel so we were definitely caught off guard by that.

Learning that parking was not an amenity included in the room rate was The premium 2 nd floor Ocean view room was placed just right for an incredible view but blocked by foliage. I brought along a small box of pastries to enjoy. I left the room to enjoy the rooftop after arriving for an hour. When back the bar top was covered in ant. Box of pastry total Loss. I asked for them to be evacuated and cleaned up and they did a great job of doing just that as well as throwing out the box of pastries that was full of ants that I had placed outside. What I would have expected was some kind of acknowledgment for my loss of pastries. Nothing was extended. Front desk was again very unclear to the complimentary SUP boards and tried to charge us for use. The property is a great location with a very likable load back Malibu vibe. Super comfortable beds and uber clean. All in all the services and ability to provide them does not match the room rate.

While you provide complimentary coffee in the morning , you charge for tea. When you’re paying that much money, that seems pretty cheesy.

The restaurant staff and food on the roof deck was superb! Special kudos and shout outs to Chris and John! Love chilling on the roof deck; best view in Malibu.

The front desk staff. They really need better training. Their communication and memory skills were poor. Forgetting details and not sharing correct information to the masseuse. Then they charged our credit cards incorrectly. Front of house is most important! #mostdisappointing

The room was clean, tidy and lovely! The staffs were all so welcoming. I really loved the rooftop, the view was fantastic!!

The room we stayed in was tiny and next to the car park. There was traffic noise all day and night. We couldn’t open our blinds to see the limited view as there were people walking by and getting in and out of cars and they could see right into our room There was no privacy. For the price that was charged for the room I would have expected a much better environment and experience.

The rooms are modern and clean (and looks great). The rooftop experience with the view on the surfer beach is one of a kind experience and the restaurant extremely good. On top, the hotel offers many perks like in room complementary freshly brewed coffee, surf boards and other services. The staff is very professional and super friendly. We definitely recommend this hotel if you want to experience the Malibu surf vibe!

The hotel has a lot of charms, very stylish and I loved the fact it’s was small. Fantastic roof top. Very convenient as opposite the pier/ surf beach.

Due to his location (next to the main road) it is quite noisy from your bedroom and hard to sleep at night.

It was not clear to me on the website that the property is across a very busy street (Highway 1) from the beach. Online photos gave the appearance it was on the beach. Staff was great, loved the roof-top restaurant, excellent food.

Location was perfect. Walkable to so many things, especially the beach right across the street. The hotel design was very tasteful, simple, sleek--total Pacific coastal vibes.

Wish the bed was a little bigger, for the price the queen felt more like a double. And I still don't get why hotels can't invest in nicer hair dryers--esp. boutique places like this.

We had an amazing stay at the Surfrider. Everything was perfect, and the rooftop bar/restaurant was truly off the charts! This place has it all so don’t hesitate to book your stay at the Surfrider!

We loved the rooftop and the service. It was a great respite.

We would have loved a different room but we were late reserving. It wasn’t Surfrider fault, we were just next to the parking lot.

Incredibly scenic views with access to local beaches and restaurants. Wonderful private restaurant and bar on site with flexible service. Minutes away from local attractions.

Parking is tight.

What a gem! On the water with that heavenly roof top lounge! The decor, landscaping, and even the smell are so beautiful and restorative. Loved the roof top! Perfect place to perch at sunset with a cocktail and good food. Service is so superb they even made sure we always had a full water bottle in the room! It's also right across the street from Malibu Farms on the pier.

Traffic noise from PCH was the only downside.

- There are bushes blocking the lower room's views. Though I understand this is for privacy reasons, it did make the rooms a little dark. - Sometimes felt pushed to have breakfast, lunch & dinner all at the hotel. Which I guess kind of isn't a bad thing as the food is amazing!
