Independente Suites & Terrace Hotel, Lisbon
The Independente Suites & Terrace is a stylish boutique hotel housed within a beautiful early 20th-century palace that once served as the Swiss ambassador’s residence. Its architecture is quintessential Lisbon, featuring high ceilings, intricate parquet floors, and large shuttered windows that overlook the city’s historic terracotta rooftops.
The hotel is celebrated for its eclectic, “shabby-vintage” aesthetic. Rather than standardized luxury, the decor focuses on character, with rooms filled with curated antique finds—think old radiograms used as TV stands, stacks of vintage books, and custom lighting made from reclaimed piping. The building also features charming, authentic touches like tiny, original metal-gated lifts that transport you back in time.
One of the property’s main highlights is The Insólito, a rooftop restaurant and bar that offers some of the best panoramic views in the city. From this terrace, you are positioned eye-level with the historic São Jorge Castle across the hillside. It is a fantastic spot to enjoy a cocktail while watching the sunset over the River Tagus.
Location-wise, it sits perfectly between the trendy nightlife of Bairro Alto and the elegant downtown district of Chiado. You are essentially across the street from the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, one of the city’s most famous viewpoints. Nearby, you can easily catch the iconic Gloria Funicular or walk to the historic Carmo Convent and the bustling Rossio Square, making it an ideal base for exploring Lisbon’s hilly, atmospheric streets.
Expert reviews
“After the success of the Independente Hostel & Suites — a stylish boutique hostel and hip bar — the same group has transformed the neighboring townhouse into the Independente Suites & Terrace. The 18 suites are decorated with vintage finds, while the rooftop restaurant offers unusual, inventive neo-Portuguese and global cuisine.”

“Take a palatial Lisbon building, all grand staircase, arches and columns; knock out the stuffiness; add style, life and humour; and you get the Independente. The former Swiss Embassy makes a light and spacious hostel, with triple-storey bunks in airy rooms with wedding-cake ceilings.”
“In a city famed for its trendy hostels, this place stands out. For as little as €12 guests can get a room with a view in a Belle Époque palace that was once the official residence of Switzerland’s ambassador. The location is hard to beat.”
