Hotel Gerbermühle, Frankfurt
Expert reviews
“Among Hotel Gerbermühle’s selling points is its fine dining restaurant (mains from €19.50) that combines local food (beef tartare, wiener schnitzel with cranberries) with international classics (chicken in calvados sauce). It is on the river and has great views of the city skyline.”
“Frankfurt’s wildest new hotel overlooks the river and Osthafen docklands on the central city’s eastern edge. It’s an art hotel with décor that ranges from antique (exposed stone walls) to offbeat (horse lamps).”
“Housed inside a 14th-century building that was once frequented by Goethe, the Gerbermühle has been reincarnated into a unique and atmospheric hotel. As well as incredibly homely rooms, it offers a rustic restaurant, pleasant beer garden and a small stone-walled bar.”

All you need to know
The building that houses the Hotel Gerbermühle has seen many transformations over the centuries since it was built in the 1300s. Constructed on the left bank of the River Main in the 14th century, the structure was surely destined for great things as this was the foundation of the rich history of the hotel today. In the 16th century, it was turned into a corn mill and in the 17th century, a tannery. These two historic roles have given the Gerbermühle its name. ‘Gerber’ means tannery and ‘Mühle’, mill. Its transformation into a world-famous hotel was envisioned by the owner, Werner Kindermann who pioneered its renovation and refurbishment.
The German hotel is located in the posh Sachsenhausen neighborhood in Frankfurt. Sachsenhausen has characterized cobblestone streets and sun-dappled squares, which are an absolute pleasure to stroll. The area is best known for its apple wine and offers a vibrant nightlife with lots of bars and beer gardens to choose from.
The suites of the hotel were the creation of architects Müller & Jourdan, who drew inspiration from the building’s physical structure and historical legacy. The old stone walls and exposed beams are remnants of the build’s past. Each room is named after someone who played a role in the life of the structure.
