The Dean Hotel, Dublin

33 Harcourt St, Saint Kevin's, Dublin 2, Ireland (show on map)

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“In a six-story Georgian building, this 51-room property bears the distinction of being one of the newest hotels in Dublin’s city center. A tasteful, reasonably priced crash pad for those who want to be in the heart of the night life district.”

The Guardian review:

“Reserved and understated on the outside, unapologetically hip on the inside, The Dean blasted onto Dublin’s hotel scene in 2014. Rooms here look a little as though they’ve been transported from a Brooklyn brownstone and are given monikers such as modpods and Hi-Fis.”

Telegraph review:

“The boutique Dean Hotel, part of a terrace of Georgian townhouses, offers first-class, quirky accommodation in a city centre location. It’s young at heart, with a funky ambience plus DJs at the weekend, and its bar and restaurant are among the city’s most fashionable spaces.”

What guests liked

All you need to know

A major partner of the Irish Museum of Modern Art in 2017, the Dean Dublin is a boutique hotel located in Dublin city center, only a few yards from the Gaiety Theatre. The St Patrick’s Cathedral and Old Jameson distillery are only a few minutes’ walk away from its front doors. The hotel is surrounded by the city’s bars and clubs and guests can easily become immersed in the rich culture and traditions of the neighborhood.

When not soaking up this excitement, guests can relax in air conditioned rooms that include a TV, minibar, coffee machine, electric kettle and private bathroom with a shower, hairdryer and free toiletries. The rooms even offer city views. The property is newly designed with vibrant colors and that vibrancy clearly extends to each room.

On Conde Nast Traveller hot list, the hotel prides itself on separating it’s self from the conventional. It boasts a rooftop bar and restaurant. The restaurant has a 270 degree view of the city. The effect is truly mesmerizing, just as is the entire stay at this one-of-a-kind hotel. This view and city is best enjoyed with a partner and this hotel is great for couples.

Well equipped, friendly staff and good location

Friendly staff, let us use the gym after the marathon so we could shower. Electronics in the room were well known branded (Smeg, Marshall, Nespresso, Samsung), not just cheap generic ones. Also shower had the central overhead source vs arm off the side wall. Location was minutes walk from Grafton Street and good for the marathon start/finish

Only thing really was no early breakfast on marathon day, but hopefully they'll have it next year

Pleasant

Great size room, lovely bathroom, staff, especially in restaurants and front desk were lovely - Dave in particular

Very small sink with no plug and paper cups, only 3 hangers in the wardrobe, soft bed and could feel that it was a zip and link double as no mattress topper to prevent this. Travel cot on initial arrival was awful quality and took a few attempts to get right.

Weekend break in Dublin

Good location. Comfy room. Helpful staff.

Decor a bit wild. Pricey but I guess it's Dublin prices! Only one lift working to the bar.

Very wholesome

Room was gorgeous and the gym facilities were great. Breakfast was 10/10 too

You could hear all the bars very well, i know it is city centre and it is kind of expected but wasn't expecting it to be that loud.

Lovely

Great location and cozy feel. Absolutely awesome gym and rooftop restaurant and bar

Our original room was just too small. Literally could not unpack suitcases. Room best suited for a single light traveler rather than a couple abroad for 2 weeks. However the staff were quite gracious about giving us a much larger room.

Good location, but very small rooms and noisy on weekends

The location and vibe of the hotel are incredible. Super funky design with cool amenities. Location too is fantastic. Staff was vey friendly so that made the stay nicer

Given the hotel prices are more on the expensive side, I have two things to say: The rooms are really small - I booked a larger room and still we could barely walk around the bed. It was ok considering we only had small luggage so opening it wasn’t a big problem. There are a few nightclubs around and on weekends you l hear the music playing until 3am. We were ok with it and somehow managed to sleep ok, but I think it’s important to consider as for some people it will be a huge issue.

Staff were friendly and very apologetic about a room mix up. They were very helpful when we arrived early and we could store our bags after check out. The location is great. We had breakfast, which was lovely but so expensive! The kids loved the bunk beds.

I felt the room needed a bit of a deep clean. Dust and buildup in the desk area. The bathroom looked lovely but on closer inspection the shower was not great. The tiles showed signs of limescale buildup or mildew... Not a deal breaker but I think given how this hotel positions itself I would expect it to be immaculate. We had a bunk bed room which had all the sweets laid out for the kids but find the mini bar prices first because everything is charged for!

Location is good, cool building

Our room faced nightclubs on the street and it was so loud till 3am, there was earplugs next to the bed so it’s a known issue and we would have never booked those rooms had we known, we’ve come home really tired.

Great hotel with nice, spacious rooms and a great gym

Nice hotel, beautiful and spacious room. Everything was good, not much to add. The street the hotel is on is busy with lots of bars and clubs, but as I was visiting during the work week, it wasn't noisy at all. Nice, easy walking distance to the city centre. Really really good gym in the basement of the hotel (including sauna and a small pool), which guests are allowed to use for free.

Great location, lovely place but not exactly the ‘cead míle fáilte’ that one expects in Dublin.

Great location, lovely hotel, great decor. Loved the pool, the rooftop bar. All very stylish. It’s our second time there.

Some of the staff (not all) were very arrogant and/grumpy which is a huge pity and totally unnecessary. Pity, especially as they try to sell the ‘Dublin touch’.

The Dean was overall a lovely hotel with lots of nice touches & we wish we had a bit more time there

Staff were very helpful Room décor was lovely Balcony was a nice addition Beautiful big bed and was very comfortable Drinking water (in tetrapacs) and toiletries provided (including hair conditioner) Heated radiator for towels. Facecloths also provided. Late check-out of 12 noon as standard

The door into the bathroom was broken (had came off the runner) and even when fixed, didn't close properly and just rolled open again. No lock on bathroom door. Whilst balcony was a nice addition, it was beside and overlooked a building site. No mugs were provided for tea/coffee, just two paper cups holding the teabags and sachets that we had to empty and clean before use. The cups didn't fit properly in the espresso machine. Proper mugs and cutlery would have been much nicer and more sustainable than disposable cups and spoons.. We didn't get to experience the rooftop restaurant as it was fully booked..

Very good

Staff were excellent especially reception who were chatty and interested in getting to know us and purpose of our visit. Location near Stephens Green is excellent, the bar is fab. The hotel is modern and welcoming, rooms were clean and beds were comfortable

The noise level in the bedroom was unbelieveably loud even when I used the earplugs supplied, I got out of bed to check was the window closed, it was. I had read the reviews and was aware of the noise from outside however I hadn't realised it was next door to a nightclub/late bar with outdoor beer garden area.

Beautiful hotel, some staff are horrendous to deal with, most are excellent.

It’s beautiful, contemporary and cosy.

Very rude staff members. Unsure if they were incompetent or just extremely rigid. But their manner was very unpleasant. The person who checked us in and checked us out was lovely however a this was a relief. Our issue was with the staff member we spoke to over the phone re our booking, and one, perhaps the same person who was checking out someone else at the same time that we were checking out and it was so hard not to overhear and to ignore how horrible she was to this guest.

Fabulous

I was disgusted at the price of the hotel and to not include breakfast in that price is outrageous, €520 for one night!!! Its very unfair to up the prices of rooms just because of a few concerts!!! Most people I know would go for weekend breaks in ireland if the prices were reasonable. Your hotel is fabulous but not to include breakfast at those prices , is just pure greedy. I won't be staying in it again and won't be recommending it for those reasons.

Very comfortable

The beds were incredibly comfortable, and even though the hotel is in a busy area, the room was surprisingly quiet. I had a great night’s sleep and would absolutely recommend staying here.

The room was very comfortable, but the cleanliness could have been better. There was quite a bit of dust on the furniture, and I noticed some leftover makeup from a previous guest on the side of the bed. That said, the bed itself appeared clean and tidy.

Fantastic gym and staff were great

I didn’t realise it had a club on the rooftop so my first room sounded like it was in a DJ booth! So I downgraded my room to get a quieter room. I would say it was a great place, but maybe meant for younger party ge-ers

Most enjoyable, comfortable and stylish, a real treat

Ideal location, clean and bright rooms, range of facilities, helpful and pleasant staff

Our townhouse room was in a separate building (very close, two doors down the street) to the main hotel. This wasn’t a major issue, but it would have been nice to know in advance.
