Atheneum Suite Hotel, Detroit
Located right in the heart of downtown Detroit’s lively Greektown district, the Atheneum Suite Hotel is a major piece of the city’s history. The building was constructed back in the 1920s by the famed firm Walbridge Aldinger and designed by prominent architect George Mason. It originally served as a massive warehouse for the D.M. Ferry Seed Company, from a time when Detroit was actually the world capital of seed production.
When the building was creatively transformed into an upscale, all-suite hotel in 1992, the designers kept a lot of its industrial bones intact. The warehouse’s original, heavy structural concrete columns were cleverly integrated into the layout, which is why guests today will find massive, decorative pillars standing right inside their hotel rooms.
The hotel’s theme beautifully mirrors its Greektown surroundings, welcoming guests with a spectacular marble lobby adorned with grand murals of ancient Greek mythological characters. True to its all-suite setup, the rooms are notably huge and feature playful nods to Hellenistic design alongside their signature, oversized marble bathrooms equipped with deep soaking tubs or whirlpools.
The location is a sports and entertainment fan’s dream, sitting just a short four-block walk from both Comerica Park, where the Detroit Tigers play, and Ford Field, home of the Lions. It is also just blocks from the historic theater district, housing the majestic Fox Theatre, and a brief ride from the energy of the Detroit Riverfront.
Getting around the rest of the city is incredibly straightforward since the hotel sits just one block from the Detroit People Mover transit loop. This makes it an easy jumping-off point to explore nearby cultural heavyweights like the Detroit Institute of Arts or take a quick drive over to the legendary Motown Museum.

Great experience overall
Very clean, rooms are very spacious for the price and great location to walk around with lots close to do.
Nothing that’s a deal breaker. If you go, have your car valet parked. Then it’s only $40 for the night. The parking garage nearest is $11 an hour to park!!

A must stay if coming to Detroit!
The hotel rooms were so spacious and comfortable. The staff were so fun and accommodating. The shuttle service (Corey) was absolutely fantastic and made our eventful weekend less stressful. Sooooo appreciative of the shuttle service and recommendations for restaurants. We will definitely be returning!

So glad to we stayed at The Atheneum!!
Soo beautiful and close to the Ford Field venue!! Our suite was great…my husband said “this is an apartment!” The staff were exceptional, kind and hospitable!! I would stay here again ❤️
The tub in the bathroom was a little difficult to get in and out of. No hand rails. If knee mobility is an issue, ask for a handi-capable option

It was comfortable and nice
I like the property it was pretty
I didn’t like that there was no microwave in the suite

The suite did its job. We had a fun weekend in Detroit, but if you are looking for luxury in your room, this is not the
Perfect location
Updates to rooms needed. A suite should at least have a microwave. There are no water fountains or vending machines, so the only option for water is $5 bottled water. There was a pin or something in the sofa cushion that pierced my skin.

It is a beautiful hotel with great staff.
The hotel was aesthetically beautiful and the room was very nice. I liked that the staff was very professional and friendly. Darnell and Corey were very helpful and personable. I could that they enjoy what they do and it was evident in their service which made our stay more enjoyable.

Quick and fun.
Location, we liked the shuttle as well.
Those kinda weird shower/tub combos. They seem like an accident waiting to happen. Very awkward and not user friendly.

It was nice the evening staff at Fishbones were terribly horrendous. We sat down and got served 1.5 hours after while an
That it’s in the center of everything and everything/everywhere is only about 5 mins tops to walk to.
The air quality was pretty bad in the rooms, I almost choked on nothing in the middle of the night in my sleep. Terrible.

Definitely Would Recommend
Room was spacious and location was great.
Bed was a little hard for my taste. Hardest I've ever had at a hotel. It was clean though.

Very nice but crappy sleep.
The room was nice and clean. The bathtub was AMAZING!!! Valet was very friendly. Overall it was a very nice stay.
The bed is very very uncomfortable. My husband prefers a firm mattress and it was even difficult to sleep for him. The pillows are also very firm. That is our only complaint though, and it might just be personal preference.

To sum it up, I'll definitely stay here again!
Room was spacious and clean! Probably needs a decor update at some point but nothing serious. Staff was LOVELY from the late night check in to the mid day parking valets to the bartender on a busy Friday night.
I wish I'd had a few less expensive options but only suites were available.

Weekend Stay In Detroit
This hotel was absolutely magnificent! I was so surprised at the size of my room! Apartments in New York would be quite envious. Absolutely beautiful decor.
The ONLY thing that is dicey is the actual location because of the tremendous amount of construction being done in Downtown Detroit. A lot of streets are blocked off so the GPS got turned around. But it is a hidden gem when you find it!

Detroit has gotten so fun. I will come again and hope to stay at this hotel.
Huge rooms. True suites with separate living room and sunken bedroom. Big bathroom with a huge soaking tub. Cool, funky decor. Slightly dated but still fun.

Great accommodations but lobby bar staff were dismissive
Great location, comfortable accomodations, quiet
Bar staff in lobby during the hours of 9-10pm on Friday were dismissive of my husbands presence when he went to the lobby bar to order a drink. Initially my husband got us two beers at the lobby bar. After 20 minutes, he went up to get us two more. I was sitting in the lobby chair waiting for him. After 10 minutes, I looked over and he was still standing at the corner of the bar waiting. I got up to go to him and I asked him why it was taking so long to get two beers. He reported that a tall bartender asked him if he needed anything and that he said “ yes, I’d like to order,” then the bartender walked away (there was another bar attendant there but he was counting his till and had his back to us). As I witnessed the scene, the tall bartender proceeded to attend to and have conversations with those seated at the bar and those seated at tables nearby never looking our way ; very poor customer service to not fulfill my husbands order or provide eye contact to us . Frustrated, I waved down this same bartender and vocalized that we needed to pay our bill. I feel that this staff member needs customer service and sensitivity training. I felt he was an ageists because we were not young like him and not sitting at the bar. After 5/6 minute’s, We finally got our bill, never our second beer and finally left the lobby at 945/10. Please provide a solution. This is unacceptable.

I recommend this hotel as it's close to events and provides a shuttle. The rooms are spacious.
Room was spacious. Liked shuttle to piston game, very convenient. Very clean.
Could use more towels in the room. The room is for 4 but there are only 2 towels. We were on 9th floor so it's a pain to have to ask for more. Wish there was continental breakfast for price. Very expensive to park cars.

Great hotel for events in town - but expect to mostly fend for yourself.
