Built in 1889 during Denver’s frantic silver boom, Castle Marne Bed & Breakfast is a striking National Historic Landmark in the City Park West neighborhood. The stunning structure was designed by noted architect William Lang, who crafted the exterior out of hand-carved, rustic lava stone (rhyolite). It effortlessly channels a grand, fairy-tale look right in the middle of the city.
The building boasts a rich history, having served as a grand home for some of Denver’s most prominent families. Notable residents include Sarah Platt Decker, a pioneering suffragist who fought for Colorado women’s right to vote, and a founder of the nearby Denver Museum of Nature and Science. After falling into abandonment during the 1980s real estate bust, the mansion was lovingly saved and turned into an upscale boutique inn.
Stepping inside reveals incredible architectural surprises. The cozy parlor fireplace is watched over by intricate, hand-carved “Green Man” pagan figures on the wooden mantel. Looking up as you climb the grand staircase reveals the historic “Peacock Window,” a magnificent circular stained-glass piece that filters beautiful midday light throughout the house.
The individual guest rooms balance authentic Victorian antiques with total comfort, and several suites even offer private outdoor hot tubs or solariums. True to its historic roots, the inn purposefully omits televisions from the rooms, encouraging guests to unwind completely with complimentary afternoon tea and cookies in the parlor.
The location is ideal for sightseeing. Guests are just a short walk from the expansive Denver Botanic Gardens and the popular Denver Zoo. Literature fans will love being blocks from the iconic Tattered Cover Book Store on Colfax Avenue, and music lovers can catch a nearby shuttle heading straight out to the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
