The BIG Luxury Backpackers, Cape Town

‘The Big’ at Greenpoint is very safe and secure, open, airy, clean looking, homely, which nice communal areas and a small swimming po in the courtyard. Great value for money. I liked it attracts a wider age range from young, old, families, groups and solos.


Theres lots of nicely decorated communal, work and relaxing areas. The dining and kitchen area is light, airy, clean, inviting.

The 3 female dorm was lovely, light, airy, lots of airflow, large lockers, clean and didn’t feel like a hostel at all. It’s very homely with nice little decor.

The breakfast is lovely and plentiful.

The staff are friendly, relaxed and downright lovely, especially Chantelle and Laura. I’d highly recommend this hostel.

Air conditioning didn’t really get cold, definitely not below 20 degrees. The fan on the ceiling is very loud and wobbly.

This was my third stay and definitely not my last. The staff, location, and breakfast are fantastic! The layout offers plenty of space for working remotely without bothering others (and vice versa :-) ).

Very lovely staff, very good breakfast, extremely clean rooms (we asked not to have room service every day, unfortunately it was ignored), lovely pool and backyard, not crowded at all, peaceful!

It’s not really a hostel which the name would suggest but a rather a very nice (or depending in your standards) bed and breakfast.

I have stayed in The BIG already before and will stay again! The hostel is in great location, always clean and the team is very accommodating!

The working staff is really friendly and the hostel offers everything you need. It is clear and the included breakfast is delicious. The area where you’re staying is perfectly located.

Two converted old houses into communal spaces, lovely tree filled outdoor spaces and pool. Birds singing.

Top bunk bed in mixed dorm has no vertical bar to get into bed, which is problematic. Needs to be reviewed.

Great location, spacious bedroom with air conditioning, pleasant staff.

Extremely clean, clean towels and bedding.
It was also very quiet, no road noise.

This is very picky, shame it’s not closer to the beach.

Chantal and John were so welcoming and went out of their way to make sure I was well looked after, even making me fresh coffee and some breakfast for my early morning checkout - thank you! Delicious and social communal breakfast the previous morning. Good location. Nice vibes.

What seemed empty as first, turned out to be full of guests with interesting life experiences.
The largely female staff, while living up to the high expectations of the boss, were full of humour and kindness.
Landscaping, kitchen, pool were good to excellent. Interesting conversation with the boss.

The property is perfect. There is nothing to complain about. I loved the fact that it had a Whatsapp group to communicate and also allow guests to communicate with each othet.

There was no A/C in the room. So we had to open the windows and that causes mosquitoes to come inside the room which was annoying while sleeping. There is a mosquito spray in the room but this doesnot really solved the problem.

This was the 1 hotel on the trip I was worried about prior to arrival, but turned out to be one of the best. The hotel, room and location all lived up to expectations. However the real plus was the amazing staff and team at the hotel, always friendly, always helpful and just a really great bunch of people. The breakfast was good and the Braai/BBQ night food was fanstastic

Nothing really

Exactly what I was looking for. A social hostel but not a party hostel. Rooms are clean and comfortable. It’s like sharing a room with your friends. The price is relatively high for a shared dorm, but this actually works to their benefit, as they deter the people they probably don’t want in their hostel while still being cheaper than simple hotels, while offering the social life!

Nothing negative whatsoever

I haven't met nicer hostel staff. Everyone (john, preem, chanti, josleen) were all genuinely nice and caring people that creates a family vibe and makes everyone smile. You guys are the best!

Wifi was slightly choppy at times

Clean, well decorated spaces throughout. The bed was SO comfortable. Property felt very safe/secure. Reception was helpful in booking activities. The bread at breakfast was delicious.

The BIG is everything it claims to be and more. The rooms are super clean and extremely comfortable and large. The location is absolutely fabulous - 10/10 on a walkability score. The breakfast was not only convenient and delicious, but also a great chance to meet others every morning. And the icing on the cake is the staff - everyone is so warm and friendly it just felt like home. No other place I'd stay at in Cape Town.

The staff was absolutely amazing. They were so helpful and super engaging that they wanted their guests to have the best experience possible. They would ask during breakfast who was doing what that day, but if you didn't have any plans, that's also fine. They just wanted to make sure that everyone got everything they needed to fully enjoy Cape Town.

Nothing, maybe one of the best hostels I've ever stayed. Clean, cool place, friendly people, likeminded guests.
