La Grenadine, Cape Town

15 Park Rd, Gardens, Cape Town, 8001, South Africa (show on map)

Tucked behind wooden gates right in Cape Town’s bustling City Bowl, Guesthouse La Grenadine is a gorgeous escape from the urban rush. It is housed in a restored 19th-century farmstead that once served as old stables and a school. French owners and artists, Mélodie and Maxime, fell in love with the property, saved it from being demolished by developers, and lovingly transformed it themselves.

The couple bypassed traditional interior designers, choosing instead to blend their French roots with local South African flair. They filled the rooms with repurposed structural materials, quirky local artworks, and luxurious French linens hand-embroidered by Mélodie’s family. The guest house actually takes its name from the lush, ancient pomegranate trees that shade its hidden courtyard garden.

The property sits just off trendy Kloof Street, placing you a brief walk from the colorful historic houses of the Bo-Kaap district. Major cultural landmarks like the Iziko South African Museum and the Planetarium are practically on your doorstep.

If you are looking to explore further, the base of Table Mountain and the lively V&A Waterfront are only a quick ten-minute drive away. It is the perfect home base for a central Cape Town adventure.

Lonely Planet review:

“Expat couple Maxime and Mélodie ladle on the Gallic charm at this imaginatively renovated former stables, where the ancient stone walls are a feature of the rooms.”

Great value for money, save for the rats

Very cute French vibes, lovely quiet garden in an amazing location with everything you need within a short walk.

We repeatedly saw rats running around the garden, up the side of the building and in & out of the bins. We saw them every night of our 4 night stay and so have to assume they are resident here. They didn’t put us off sitting in the garden but we were worried about the possibility of rats in the room/the living area where food was left out for breakfast and snacks. We were careful not to leave food in the room or leave the door & window unattended but it only takes one less careful guest for them to take up residence in the rooms.
Additionally, when booking we missed that there was no air con in the room we booked, given AC is listed on the property details as a whole. The ceiling fan was too noisy but they provided an additional standing fan which meant we were able to sleep comfortably in the summer heat even without air con.

Great location for exploring Cape Town

Simply beautiful hotel with a shaded and pretty garden. Interior spaces are expertly curated with vintage pictures and period furniture.

The open plan bathroom and toilet might not suit everyone but the water was hot and plentiful.

Lovely quaint oasis in the middle of Kloof Street

Breakfast was fresh and healthy produce. Delicious juices. Beautiful garden courtyard that felt like an oasis in the middle of the city. the location was fantastic with shops and restaurant a short walk away in a safe neighbourhood. Maxim was very friendly and helpful.

Suprised that for a frenchman the cheeses were not better in the morning ;) Otherwise hard to find anything to critisise!

B&B close to Kloof Street - more alternative than hip

Spacious rooms, pretty dark, good breakfast

The rooms are really dark and it a very „hippy“ place

couldn’t recommend La grenadine enough!

We had the best time at La Grenadine - Maxime and the rest of the team went out of their way to help us. From recommendations on how to plan our day to completely sorting out the dropping off of our hire car at the property
The hotel has such a welcoming vibe and feels like a mini oasis in the middle of Cape Town

Nothing! the only thing would be we didn’t have air con in our room but there was a ceiling fan

Romantic, sweet place nestled in the city.

We especially enjoyed reading and relaxing in the gardens, and eating the fabulous breakfast under the trees. Our room was romantic, with a view into the stunning bathroom and a comfortable king-sized bed. We also enjoyed getting to know Melodie, the owner, and her story history with Cape Town. The staff were super friendly - thank you to Sephora for working so hard and welcoming us with warmth!

There was a fair amount of construction going on in the city around us, so the noise level during the day is a bit obnoxious, but no concerns with that during morning, evening, or night.

Garden makes you feel you are in a secluded paradise

A magical place right within busy Cape Town - the Garden makes you feel you are in a secluded paradise while outside the busy life of Cape Town goes on. The breakfast was one of the best we got through our travel through South Africa: Everything is fresh, many little dishes - attention to detail. Well, what to expect from French owners!? ;-) The apartment was great with lots of space for our family. The owner Maxime is very kind and always helpful with lots of recommendations where to go (YES, the last day of our travel we finally made it to Babylonstoren and delivered your key! :-)). Kloof & Long Street are just a 1minute walk away.

Yes, you do not have a sea view. BUT: You are just in paradise anyway. When back to Cape Town we will be back! Thanks so much to you and your team!

Breakfast was delicious every morning! GREAT coffee! And the staff was always so pleasant and accommodating. We felt well cared for while there. The location was also wonderfully convenient. It was easy to walk to some places and also easy to get an Uber.

There wasn't anything that we didn't like. We were completely satisfied. Thank you, Maxime and the entire team, for a wonderful stay!

Home from home in a great location.

Maxim, Natasha, Sephora and Rachel were all so brilliant at looking after us and making us feel we were at home so much so we didn’t want to leave! the location is perfect an oasis in the centre of the busy Kloof street area so it’s easy to go for fab meals locally. The bed was really comfortable and the room was large and bright with a good bath and separate shower. Breakfast was delicious especially the homemade muesli.

We had a wonderful time at Le Grenadine. The hotel is trendy, delightful and comfortable. A nice place to relax and enjo

Nicely located near restaurants and bars. The garden is beautiful, the common space and rooms are nicely decorated and the ambience very relaxing, breakfast was plentiful and delicious, very nice courtesy to offer tea, coffee and cookies at all times. Very helpful recommendations on things to do and to find a driver. Michel and the staff were welcoming and went beyond in their service.

We were placed in the second floor, and during a windy night, and I couldn’t tell if it was the front door or the shutters that kept on rattling throughout the night. The internet could use some speed.

Wonderful location, would stay again if in Cape Town!

Loved the location, the garden, the breakfast, the common room and the staff!

Not dependent of the property but the construction noise on the road and the people asking for money for parking even though you’re parking on the property private parking every time

Tranquil oasis in a lively part of Cape Town

Beautiful green space right in the city. Very friendly and personal contact. Nice room. Very French atmosphere. Close to a lot of bars and restaurants and we felt safe to walk around even all the way to the waterfront. Parking next to the entrance. Good breakfast.

The room was designed for short people. Short bed, showerhead at eye level and bathroom mirrors to see my belly in.

Perfect stay for Cape Town (with a toddler)!

- I really loved the interior. And the fact that there’s a nice common area, so we could still have a lovely evening while our toddler was asleep in our room.
- The hosts were super friendly and helpful.
- The breakfast was … waw. Almost everything was home-made, which you could taste.
- We were allowed to do a late check-out on the day we flew back to Belgium, which was really nice as we have a toddler who still sleeps during the day. That way, we had a really comfortable flight back home. We really really appreciated that!
- The neighbourhood had a lot of restaurants. It was safe to walk around (even at night).

- In the beginning of our stay, we’ve showered a few times with pretty cold water. So, we’ve mentioned it at breakfast. It appeared that they were aware something was wrong, but fixed it right away (and quick). It was just a pity that it wasn’t fixed already, before we came.
- The common area was really cold, even though they had a fire place. Some blankets would have been nice! (We were there towards the end of winter.)

Communal area also could be cleaner and it smelled like cats.

Midnight check ins by other guests was done right outside of our door with no consideration for us that are sleeping. Also late message after 10pm from host asking that we put our heater off. Our heater was not on and it was conveyed that loadshedding is at midnight in any case.

Not quite what I had hoped for

Adam was very welcoming and helpful. The hotel is centrally located in Cape Town.

We arrived during a rainstorm. The rooms were cold and smelled musty. The bathroom has thick stone tiles and no heating. It was not comfortable. We had to start a log fire straight away to make it slightly warmer but the wood did not last all evening. There was a gas heater but the bottle was empty. We stayed ‘in the cottage’. To use the bathroom during the night you had to walk through the outside patio area into the main room. Not comfortable at 3 AM when it rains ( even though there is a cover). I had a cold shower int he morning as the fuse had tripped during load shedding the evening before. Adam sorted it but the others had to wait 45 minutes for the water to heat up.
This was our 8th hotel in 2 weeks. The stay here was more expensive than several other places we had stayed in but it was not up to their standard.
