Tucked away in the terraced rainforest of Keliki village, Capella Ubud isn’t your typical Bali resort. It is a whimsical, ultra-luxury tented camp designed by the legendary architect Bill Bensley. Instead of clearing the land, Bensley used a strict “minimal intervention” approach: not a single tree was cut down during construction, meaning you’ll occasionally find actual palm trees growing right through the villa decks.
The hotel’s fascinating design is styled as a theatrical tribute to 1800s European explorers. The property originally started as a plan for a massive 120-room traditional hotel, but Bensley convinced the owner to pivot to just 23 highly exclusive canvas tents. Each tent is uniquely themed after early camp personas, like the Captain, the Cartographer, or the Puppet Master, and packed with authentic antiques and Indonesian textiles.
The quirky details here are unmatched. Guests receive a “camp survival kit” at check-in, and the standard bathrooms feature dramatic, hammered-copper bathtubs alongside toilets shaped like literal royal thrones. Even the main 30-meter outdoor pool, called The Cistern, is designed to look like a giant, raised steel reservoir tank hovering right above the jungle canopy.
