The Driskill Hotel, Austin

604 Brazos Street, Austin, TX 78701, United States of America (show on map)

Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“Every city needs a beautiful historic hotel, ideally made from native stone and built by a 19th-century cattle baron. Although this one is now owned by the Hyatt, you’ll find no generic hotel decor here; everything is pure Texas.”

Fodors review:

“Each room—decorated with old photos, vintage curios, and refurbished antiques—is unique, so specific requests should be made when reserving.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Austin.

Telegraph review:

“An historic hotel that recreates the opulence and glamour of a bygone time. The Driskill is a landmark of Texas hospitality. It sets the standard for elegance and, while fully restored and redecorated, retains classics and traditions throughout.”

All you need to know

Opened in 1886, The Driskill stands as Austin’s oldest operating hotel. It was built by a wealthy cattle baron named Colonel Jesse Driskill, who spent a staggering $400,000 to construct what he envisioned as “the finest hotel south of St. Louis.” Ironically, a brutal winter and historic drought devastated his cattle empire, forcing him to sell his dream property just two years later.

The hotel’s striking “cowboy Romanesque” architecture was designed by local architects J.N. Preston & Son. If you look closely at the limestone gables on the exterior façades, you will see carved longhorn heads alongside bust portraits of Colonel Driskill and his two sons. Inside, the hotel originally featured a magnificent four-story open rotunda with a giant stained-glass dome that functioned as a natural cooling system before modern air conditioning was added in 1950.

The Driskill has a deep connection to political history, especially with President Lyndon B. Johnson. He and Lady Bird Johnson actually had their very first date here over breakfast at the 1886 Café in 1934. Later, during his presidency, LBJ used the hotel as his unofficial Texas headquarters, frequently monitoring election results from the Jim Hogg Parlor.

Wait till renovations are ovef to book this hotel

Location

Undergoing restoration. The lobby was covered in drapes. The main bar and restaurant were unusable during our stay. It was noisy and should have been 1/2 price during this period

Chris, try putting yourself in the customers shoes and come up with solutions e.g. partial refund before they do.

Location was great

I booked a twin room with two queen beds on booking.com. The hotel reserved a double bed for my son and I. I was given the option of a roll out bed or a cancellation. Check in service was poor and content to simply blame booking.com. I asked for a “one night solution” it was getting late after a 10hour flight, In the end I had a last minute scramble to book the Westin. Historic hotel visit the bar to enjoy the grand architecture - stay somewhere with 21st century service.

My granddaughter and I will make this an annual event

My six year old granddaughter was with me and she was so impressed with the service. I love so excited in nature.

We had oatmeal for breakfast. It was very appetizing and runny also very expensive for what we received.

Hoping for a 5star experience for a special birthday treat but was sadly let down by mediocrity.

What I could see of the hotel was lovely, historic and quite well maintained. The bed was very comfortable and the room "a historic king" was well designed. The domestic staff were very helpful, knowledgeable and good at their job.

The staff on the main floor while we were there were pairs of young girls who didn't seem at all interested in serving an elder, Englishwoman. I booked the hotel as a birthday treat for my partner, I asked if it could be as special as possible. Our room 427, was at the back of the hotel, about 8 feet from a brick building with a window that was so filthy that you could barely see the empty building during the day, only when its' lights were on during the night. No-one had looked at my booking and chosen my room type that had an outside window or was special. We also wanted to book dinner in the restaurant. We were told the whole mezzanine floor was closed for building work. This wasn't on the website at all when I booked. We went out to dinner instead to Gina's (excellent place). We were given two bottles of beer as a courtesy gesture to make up for the restaurant not being available, except when we got to our room with no view there wasn't a bottle opener. The maid got us one and sorted out other things in the room. Breakfast was disappointing, plastic cups and a limited menu, the food was good but we had to go up to the bar and order then display our numbered wooden spoon so the waitress knew where to bring the food. When we checked out we were charged for extras hat we didn't have, when I told the pair of girls on reception that I was disappointed with the room she said that there wasn't a view from the hotel as it was only 5 stories high. Surely the historic buildings outside the hotel, or even the sunshine would have made our stay more special. She suggested that if I wanted a better stay I come back after October when the building work should be finished. I think the desk staff could do with more training.

Elegant evening at The Driskill. Luxury and superior customer service at every point.

Room was fabulous with great view, comfortable bed, elegant appointments, small details including the Driskill D on the bed. The food in the cafe and in the evening restaurant was fabulous. Service outstanding. I could not get over how great everything was. I loved staying at The Driskill. It was an experience -not a room rental for the night.

Nothing. Everything was superlative.

Very lovely hotel in the heart of Austin with a lot of history.

Lovely hotel, friendly staff, good location.

The bar area was great, felt like an old English bar. Location is right on 6th street, lots around you, plenty of bars and restaurants. the Restaurant at the hotel had a delicious breakfast and lot of pastries, although the line-up to order was ridiculously long and only one person serving. The historical king room was lovely, a good size, huge bed.

The elevator to the historical side was incredibly slow, sometimes waiting 5-6mins for it.

We had a nice time but had a hard finding which entrance to use.

There could be MORE places to hang towels, etc. And there could be more places to put toilet articles in the bath area.

Pleasant

The location is great and the design is amazing. We feel so history.

It's the first time I see a Hyatt hotel or 5 starts without breakfast. Unbelievable. You must wait in the queue of a coffee near the hotel to get your breakfast. No restaurant in the hotel as well. For me it's not a 5 starts hotel at all!

Nice hotel but poor room housekeeping

Location, infrastructure and breakfast

the first day they didn't make our room. So we didn't have fresh towels, coffee, water, etc. We called so they made it the next day and it was poorly cleaned. They didn't even replenish coffee and carton cups.

We will be back soon!!!

The staff was very responsive. We appreciate the provision of a small fridge as we had several nights stay, and coffee and water were provided daily. The facilities are top notch and beautiful. The Christmas tree and decorations were impressive and the smell of fir trees greeted you when you entered, and there was lovely music daily.

All the staff were pleasant and helpful. But getting my car from valet consistently in 10 minutes or less is phenomenal.

Great location. Very energetic feel. Valet service was best I can recall in years.

Coffee bar/ casual restaurant was very slow. Faster to go around the corner to Royal Blue to get coffee.

Overpriced hotel. Better to stay elsewhere and visit only for a meal and/or a drink when in Austin

The hotel lobby, bar and restaurants were excellent. Lovely place to visit and have a meal or a drink.

The rooms themselves felt cheap relative to the price. The bathroom was closer to what you would find at a motel than a top hotel. They seem to have skimped on the toilet paper, towels, coffee machine, etc. Very few amenities available. The doors to the hallway are not well-insulated and the walls are paper-thin so you can hear other guests. The WiFi signal was poor in the rooms, only worked well in the lobby.
