Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“With its wraparound porch, Corinthian columns and commanding perch on Judge’s Hill, this stately building is hands-down the most photogenic inn in town. Visually striking Texas modernist artwork adorns the walls in both rooms and common areas, setting this new boutique hotel apart from its competitors.”

Fodors review:

“Historical elegance and modern amenities converge in this 47-room boutique hotel, formerly Mansion on Judges’ Hill, which reopened in 2013 after an extensive renovation and ownership change. The Goodall Wooten mansion, a Texas Historic Landmark completed in 1900 on the south edge of UT campus, still shines in all its Classical Revival glory.”

Frommers review:

“Along with its prime location in an area with a dearth of lodgings, Hotel Ella is known for its casual-chic restaurant, attentive service, and gorgeous Greek Revival architecture; the house was built in 1900 for Goodall Wooten and his new wife, the former Ella Newsome.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Austin.

Telegraph review:

“One of Austin’s most gracious historic landmarks, a stay at Hotel Ella allows guests to step back in time to the life of a wealthy turn-of-the-19th-century family. The estate retains its timeless elegance with a thoroughly updated restoration and amenities that bring it into the modern day.”

All you need to know

Hotel Ella carries the name of a woman, akin to a traditional sailing ship. Inspired by Ella Wooten, who resided at this location from 1900 until 1944, she is the namesake of this establishment.

Known for her impeccable style, gifted gardening abilities, and refined interior design taste, she was married to one of the University of Texas’ founders. She invested generously in transforming an otherwise unremarkable property close to the university into a lavish Greek Revival-style building in 1910.

Over a hundred years later, her cherished undertaking was revamped and reopened as an upscale boutique hotel.

Hotel Ella, viewed externally, retains its historical charm with its two-story stone edifice and grand colonnaded verandas. However, the interiors have been significantly altered. What were once parlors and boudoirs are now transformed into 37 guest chambers and ten suites.

These spaces are fairly typical in shape and dimensions, but the beauty lies in the exquisite workmanship. The interiors are adorned with robust and opulent materials that resonate with the epoch that influenced the establishment: desks with granite tops, towels made of combed cotton, and bath essentials by the Vintage Round Top.

A minibar filled with locally-sourced gourmet items – a delightful and welcoming feature that Ella would likely appreciate – is also available, along with a 47-inch LED screen, something Ella couldn’t have possibly known about.

Suites come with bespoke furnishings and quaint personal patios; the premier Mansion Petite Suite is situated on a section of the mansion’s extensive veranda. It’s unlikely to find a more nostalgically appealing spot to unwind with a mint julep or a glass of iced tea.

loved the room. but sick and tired of having no access to bar/barista

we love Ella. great location. great rooms and comfortable and because we have stayed there over 30 times, we are familiar with it all.

We love the bar at night -for drinks- and the bar in the morning -for a cappuccino - so we can relax at the beautiful hotel and porch at a price higher than most other hotels, and it feels like “our place”. BUT the last 5 or six times the bar has been closed by 5:00 pm and this past weekend we looked forward to a cappuccino BUT the bar/coffee shop was closed. no real response. just that rhe barista wasn’t there or they were closed or something. For a hotel to be full service, and to charge what Ella charges, it is simply necessary that these small services for your GUESTS are available. Otherwise, it is just bad service.

Beautiful, historic, boutique hotel with a boutique price

beautiful hotel and pool; beautiful artwork; charming setting; lovely veranda to sit on

I knew it was expensive but the $25 “amenity fee” for absolutely nothing special in terms of amenities seems ridiculous, while the $40 valet parking (which is the sole option) felt a bit like price gouging. Also, no one even offered to show us to our room or help with bags. Id like a bit more service with the luxury fee.

An Oasis in central Austin - shame you have to pay for parking & breakfast

Great location and good 1st visual impression in the lovely old building. Our room however was in the modern extension and was pretty small & grotty facing a wall. Quick chat with very helpful staff & we had a much nicer room with little outside area leading straight onto the pool area which was a little oasis. Really enjoyed a few days here chilling out by the pool after a road trip. Very comfy bed & good albeit quite noisy ac

As above 1st room was pretty awful but moved to a much nicer one without much difficulty. $39 per day for valet parking was a bit annoying esp and my son arrived in a second car and the undercover parking was almost empty. Breakfast not included & actually quite a few things on the menu were not available. Moral of the tale make sure you get a nice room and be prepared to by fleeced to park your car

Very good

The hotel was very good. We arrived about noon and the staff said there were no clean rooms ready. We said, no problem we'll grab lunch and do a bit of sight seeing. The staff asked for my cell number and said they would give me a call when a room became available. I never got a call from them, so I called them a little after 3:00 pm. They said that our room was ready and we could come back and check in right away. When we got to the room given to us it had not been cleaned. we were moved to a new room right away but that felt like the staff didn't really pay attention to the details they were promoting.

A beautiful place in a great location but too expensive for what you get

I love the feel of the property, location and staff are so friendly and helpful

I was really dissatisfied by the lack of options for snacks and food offered in the restaurant and no coffee in the room or even free coffee in the lobby is not good. I don’t think I should have to pay for a coffee in the bar as a guest. having an extra extra charge or resort fee is also inappropriate especially when the facilities are closed for a wedding. That was very disappointing! I have loved Ella but the cost of add ons will have me looking god another option the next time I come to Austin

Short but sweet

Location, staff, and pool. We stayed just one night. Hallway noise was disturbing through closed doors but main historic building was lovely with veranda we used to relax, the pool was small but beautiful and a scene in the evening. The restaurant was styled starkly in a Texas frontier spirit.

hallway noise, no closets, no bathtub.

Don’t book on a Tuesday

Gorgeous property! Loved the art , porch and rooms were fine. Very nice staff and nice pool area.

We didn’t realize the cool bar and great restaurant were closed on Tuesdays . What a bummer - still had a great time but missed the atmosphere.

Magical!!

This was a trip for my daughters 14th birthday. My mom, both daughters, and I spent a few days here. She picked this hotel due to the history, which she told us about at least 5 times throughout our stay. I was highly impressed with the staff, the best in the industry no doubt. They couldn't have made it any more special. My kids and I have had an insanely rough year, this was exactly what we needed at precisely the right time. I seriously will never forget the time we spent here and I know she wont either. I seriously can't say thank you enough to Hotel Ella and her glorious staff.

Way too loud to be relaxing

It’s a beautiful property in a great location

The room was very loud! It has very thin walls and we could hear everything that was going on outside our room. I was woken up at 6 am because the people above us were getting ready to leave. I could even hear their conversation! I wouldn’t stay here again because of this.

Terrible value. Very expensive for nothing.

Very expensive for sub par service. Reception staff were not very engaged, especially the morning staff. Not very helpful. There was no mini bar. Room had a strange smell. No breakfast (server called in sick). Self serve coffee was luke warm. Wouldn’t complain but given the extraordinary price we paid, it was terrible value.

If you are placed in the west wing it’s not a boutique hotel more like a poor quality motel.

Nice veranda and breakfast but won’t stay again.

Location is excellent. The veranda is the best part of the hotel and it’s very relaxing to sit out there and enjoy the oak trees. The brunch we had at the restaurant was the best brunch we’ve had anywhere.

Unfortunately it felt a bit like a bait and switch. I booked because I love historic buildings. Nothing indicated on our reservation that we were booked for the adjacent contemporary building next door. Our view was awful, too: a smelly alley, fence, and a run-down apartment building, complete with a stoned resident that had a close view of us, too. I would have appreciated an indication of the building types when booking. The art work is *interesting* - a combo of nudes and revolvers. Also, we used the valet and the next morning we discovered they didn’t lock the door and our belongings were rummaged through, and some things stolen. Finally, we were billed for a chocolate bar we never ate. Thankfully we were refunded the valet and chocolate, but we will see if they reimburse us for our loss.

We had hoped to have a very memorable stay but were disappointed.

The hotel was really clean and the housekeeping staff were very vigilant and obviously had great attention to detail. The pool was welcome relief on the very hot days.

The stay overall was very overpriced for what we received. Whilst the room was nice, it was obviously tired and ready for the upcoming update. The front door to the main hotel building was not secure. The housekeeping and valet staff were very good, but the front office and restaurant staff seemed somewhat disinterested. The meals at the restaurant were quite overpriced for their quality and the menu was very meagre.

Ok but expected more bang for my buck! Fell short

The property was very clean

I love historic places and this is a beautiful mansion but I was unaware that it was located within the campus of U.T. The booking website said it was a few miles away from U.T. But it sits right on the Westside of the campus. Also the hotel was great but smaller in person the room was cozy but a few things needed to be upgraded the T.V.s and bed’s specifically and the carpet in the rooms there were also a few cracks under one of the windows, cracks in the wood needed repairing the refrigerator and tv stands were outdated also. It was a cozy little place but for the price I’d pass it’s very overpriced in my opinion if your looking for a good location and value for your money. #NO IRONING BOARDS OR IRONS OR MICROWAVES EITHER

Very frustrating, pleasant at times, staff helpful but limited as to what they could do for our particular issues.

staff very helpful and friendly Food quite good; free coffee in the morning

WiFi didn’t work in our room downstairs which was a huge inconvenience as we were travelling from abroad and relying on WiFi as opposed to data roaming. We were given a discount because of this but it was hugely inconvenient as we had to go to reception to message or contact anyone. My daughter in Texas was even unable to contact us when she needed to. Also I had specifically chosen a deluxe poolside room for easy access to the pool (pics on website suggest access to pool direct from these rooms). Unfortunately there were high railings and a permanently locked gate to the pool from the room. This significantly reduced the whole “poolside experience” I was expecting. Very disappointing as to access the pool you had to exit your room and walk around to another gate. Apparently this was due to health and safety issues which I thought was really unnecessary as the gates had child proof latches on them. While we were there there was a power outage and our room keys didn’t work. Reception staff had to come with us to let us access our room. Another inconvenience.
