Graycliff Hotel Nassau, Bahamas
Expert reviews
“A colonial mansion in the heart of downtown, Graycliff Hotel has manicured grounds; 20 guest rooms, a pool cottage where Winston Churchill once stayed, and tobacco-rolling sessions at the on-site Graycliff Cigar Company.”
Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Nassau, Bahamas.
“The old-world flavor of this Georgian colonial landmark—built in the 1720s by ship captain Howard Graysmith—has made it a perennial favorite among both the rich and the famous (past guests have included the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Winston Churchill, Aristotle Onassis, and the Beatles).”
“The best hotel in the Bahamas isn’t even on the beach. It’s in downtown Nassau, right across from Government House, converted from the 1740 home of pirate Captain John Howard Graysmith, itself built from the remains of the 17th-century First Anglican church.”
“Nassau’s most characterful hotel is this 260-year-old home, built by a wealthy pirate. Hidden above town on West Hill St, the Georgian main house is filled with high-ceilinged rooms, musty antiques, mismatched oriental rugs and intriguing nooks and corners begging further exploration.”
“A Bahamian treasure dating back to 1740 and the pirate days of Captain John Howard Graysmith, Graycliff became an inn in 1844, reverted to a private mansion in the 1940s and, thirty years later, was reborn as an exquisitely-styled boutique hotel. It boasts the third-largest wine cellar in the world.”
“Nothing much has changed in this historic Nassau manor house for decades. The bedrooms still have kitsch fabrics and sturdy wooden furniture — more fitting of an English country house than the Bahamas — and the downstairs restaurant is still considered one of Nassau’s best.”

All you need to know
The stunning Graycliff hotel is located on the island of New Providence, in the town of Nassau, minutes from the beautiful white sandy beaches. The hotel itself is a piece of history and is situated in an 18th Century restored mansion, which is evident from the opulent design of the hotel.
Inside the hotel welcomes you with an old-time glamor while offering all the modern amenities you could expect from a 5-star hotel. The Graycliff hotel oozes sophistication with intimate candle-laden tables and a stylish colonial design throughout the premises.
Guest rooms include four poster beds, with splendid draping curtains and plushy upholstered furniture. Rooms are spacious and most rooms offer wonderful views over the hotel gardens. The hotel includes two swimming pools and two excellent restaurants. The Graycliff restaurant serves traditional Bahamian and contemporary food, whereas on the Piazza there is a pizzeria and a Brazilian steakhouse to satisfy guests’ hunger.
The Graycliff hotel is excellently located in the popular town of Government House, located in the old part of Nassau and close to the airport. Guests can enjoy days at the stunning nearby beaches or explore the town’s National Art Gallery.
The hotel is well located to explore the island and reach all the popular tourist areas. Paradise island is also close by and guests can enjoy the impressive stretches of pristine beach such as Cove Beach where the waters are crystal clear.

Horrible.
Nothing.
This hotel is a scam. Old, dirty, dilapidated bathrooms, little and cold water in the shower. The staff is not up to par. a hotel that isn't even worth a two star if they sell it as a 5. Smelly and noisy air conditioning, humid rooms. Sewage smell from the drains. Noises coming from the street. Money thrown away. Breakfast an hour later than scheduled.

Soooo prettier than on the photos
In busy, touristy, sometimes even artificial Nassau, this is the oasis you are looking for. I can't put my finger on it, but none of the photos, not even professional ones, pay this place justice. They tend to come out "granny-style". But the house is a gorgeous colonial-style building full of antiques and lovely details. It is like travelling back in time, in a good way. The huge, lush garden with the pool (yep, that pool with the blue, painted bottom) makes you forget the crowded, souvenir shops and the dusty roads in a second.
I needed to get some work done, but the wifi wasn't great in our cottage in the garden. It is a good excuse to not work, but I have to pay the bills somehow....

Had a close encounter with huge rat outside my room. Room misadvertised, place not 5*, service poor
The restaurant service was insanely slow and they got a lot wrong, but the wine list was awesome. Cool New Year's Eve party.
In my many years on booking.com I've never had such a disappointing experience with a hotel. I was so excited to go here and crestfallen to find they are falsely advertised. The room we were assigned was awful, not with a garden or pool view as booking.com promised, and instead down the busy street (with no sidewalk) above a noisy tourist shop. Toilet didn't work. Housekeeping didn't replace any water or coffee. On the first night, an absolutely gigantic rat ran past me on the stone stairs to my room. That moment just summed it all up for me. First time paying 5 star prices and getting dive bar experience. In short, this was not a 5 star hotel or experience and customer service was poor to nonexistent.

A wonderful, relaxing few days
Continental breakfast was wonderful. Lots of other choices to add on. Restaurant served exceptional food with friendly, efficient service. Room was large and comfortable with nice ameneties in the bathroom. Christopher made my stay very special as he drove me around the island and told me about it's history.
Internet was not great.

Booked the “Presidential Suite”. Greeted in our room by two cockroachs, paws up, one in the bath tub, the other by the d
Well located, historic, charming and lush property in the heart of old Nassau.
Not well maintained. Evidence of faded grandeur visible everywhere. Come for a meal if you like but DO NOT book a room.

Exceptional
The place is magical. It is meant as a hideaway spot which it attains. The rooms/suites are gorgeous and quaint. You can literally get anything you can imagine it just might take a little time and planning if its something uncommon.
They used to have a gym, not well equipped, but at least it was there. Since our last time there they have closed the gym and use it as a storage room now. The hotel really needs to refurbish the gym and add the spa back. There are also a lot of broken electrical boxes and lights which need to be replaced. It makes the place look run down a bit.

It’s a centrally located and beautiful property with a gorgeous pool, but could use some updates.
The property is beautiful and the staff is amazing
The beds are hard and old and the bathrooms were very dated, my tub nor shower would work properly, the bath faucet was spewing rust from old pipes and the shower head had 3 small streams of water from a 1980s small shower head.
