The Yeatman Hotel, Porto

Rua do Choupelo (Santa Marinha), 345, 4400-088 Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. (show on map)

The Yeatman is a sophisticated sanctuary for wine lovers, perched on a hill in Vila Nova de Gaia. Named after a prominent British family of port traders, the property honors the city’s rich history as the center of the port wine trade. Since its opening in 2010, it has become a landmark for luxury, blending classic British comfort with deep-rooted Portuguese wine culture.

The architecture is a clever nod to the Douro Valley, featuring a terraced design that allows every single room and suite to overlook the Douro River and Porto’s historic center. Each room is uniquely styled in partnership with a different Portuguese winery, using art and decor to reflect that vineyard’s specific personality and heritage.

A standout feature is the hotel’s deep commitment to its oenological roots. Beyond a wine cellar housing over 30,000 bottles, the spa offers specialized vinotherapy treatments, and the iconic outdoor infinity pool is shaped like a giant decanter. Even the surrounding gardens were carefully cultivated to promote sustainability, incorporating lush plant life and a 1,400-year-old olive tree.

Dining is another highlight, as the hotel’s gastronomic restaurant holds two Michelin stars. Located just steps from historic port lodges like Taylor’s, guests are perfectly positioned to explore the winding streets of Gaia. A quick water taxi ride across the river places you directly in the heart of Porto, where you can easily reach famous landmarks like the Clerigos Tower and the Ribeira district.

Expert reviews

Frommers review:

“This place really has it all: a Michelin-starred restaurant serving some of the country’s finest haute cuisine; a fabulous spa; hyper-comfortable rooms; and, most of all, views. From its hillside location above Gaia’s wine lodges, the Yeatman has Porto laid before it.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Porto.

Telegraph review:

“From a decanter-shaped pool and the 25,000-bottle cellar to the grape-pip treatments at its spa, this stylish hotel revolves around wine. It has a Michelin-starred restaurant and mesmerising views over Porto, with spacious rooms to boot.”

Staff, food, view, room

Little things like our aircon did not work so we had to move rooms. The shower leaked and the door to the shower crashed against the door to the bathroom

Good as ever and relatively good value out of season

Of course The Yeatman is tradionally Porto's finest hotel, certainly one of them, in most people's estimation. It remains a luxurious, charming and fascinating building and a superb place to stay or eat. The surroundings are elegant, classic and yet modern. The views across the river back to Porto itself are unbeatable. The multi-level design of the building set a precedent that has since been followed many times in Vila Nova de Gaia. All the restaurants are excellent. It's expensive, but relatively reasonable in shoulder season or off season. On this visit, I enjoyed as always seeing a bird of prey - a Harris Hawk, my cousin tells me based on photos - being used to scare off other creatures, and the lift interiors with their clever wall to wall panoramas of the Douro Valley and a wine cellar. Finally, it was sweet to be in a room named "Quinta do Crasto" after one of my favourite Douro wines!

It's not really convenient for public transport, although in fairness, it's the sort of hotel where sweeping up and down the drive in a taxi adds to the experience anyway! The best (Michelin starred) restaurant is not open on Sundays which, while understandble perhaps, limits things for anybody arriving late on a Saturday as sometimes one must. However the "second best" Orangerie restaurant is good enough for most of us most of the time!

Still lovely, 10 years later

Location, housekeeping staff, cleanliness, gastronomic restaurant and staff, view from floors 4 to 9.

Some reception and Dick’s bar staff are mildly out of their depth. Some training would be useful. It seems as though Booking.com bookers get rooms with less of a view.

A truly first class experience - would highly recommend.

The property is beautiful - the view of Porto from our private terrace (most rooms have private terraces) was picture perfect. After experiencing hotels with a gym that consisted of a bench, mat and some free weights, we especially appreciated the proper gym and beautiful spa facilities (many types of saunas, Roman bath, etc) and the stunning outdoor pool area, all of which were large and top quality. The breakfast was the most beautiful and delicious breakfast we have ever experienced and we have sampled many over the years - truly first class. The linens, bed comfort, towels, etc are also of premium quality.

The room decor is somewhat dated - but reflects the style of the hotel.

Overall, The Yeatman is more than a hotel, it’s an experience. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Porto.

The Yeatman is simply outstanding. The views over Porto and the Douro River are breathtaking, especially at sunset. The staff go above and beyond with warm, attentive service, making you feel truly welcome. Rooms are spacious, luxurious, and extremely comfortable, with every detail carefully thought out. The breakfast is excellent, and dinner at the restaurant is unforgettable, especially paired with their incredible wine selection.

The pools and spa are the perfect place to relax after exploring the city.

The best place in Porto.

Property is insanely nice. Far exceeded expectations.

Could do with some easy maintanence in the room (some spots on walls, lose door handle etc), but nothing major. Service was pretty good, but some people just speak very poor English, which makes communication hard and you will get disappointed from time to time.

Amazing rooms, service and views.

Absolutely breathtaking property! We attended a wedding on the property as well. Our stay was amazing! A special thanks to the young lady (concierge) that helped us book our train tickets. She went above and beyond to secure our tickets.

We will definitely stay at this hotel the next time we are in Porto.

The wonderful staff made for such a lovely experience!

The hotel itself, with the location in Gaia overlooking the Douro River and Porto in the background, was just beautiful!

What made our stay so wonderful though, was the staff at the hotel.

From our first contact with the bellman (I failed to get his name), to our check-in with Gustavo Moreira at the front desk, as well as everyone else we came in contact with, it’s difficult to describe just how positive and engaging everyone was.

A special note about Gustavo . . . I can’t say what all of the reasons for this were, but both my wife and I felt an instant connection with him from the get go, and we knew we had found a new Portuguese friend when checking in with him. Lovely, just lovely!

So many at the hotel had such a positive energy about them ~ There was Ana, a waitress and hostess in the restaurant. Also Matilde (I think that was her name), a young waitress in the breakfast buffet. Since we were there leading into Palm Sunday, she was sharing about her Easter traditions in the small village where she grew up in eastern Portugal. Her eyes were so bright, you could see she had such joyful hope for her future.

I also failed to get the name of the woman who escorted us to our room. She appeared to be a manager near the front desk, and hers was such a positive and welcoming energy that lifted our spirits.

When we were checking out, there were two bellmen, the one wearing a jacket with long tails was discussing a sports trade with me that our hometown Dallas Mavericks had made, when trading Luka Doncic to the Lakers for AD. We had some laughs about that, and I found both of the bellmen to be exemplary souls in how to be the first contact at an upscale hotel.

You know, my wife and I have contemplated whether we might one day leave our home in the USA, to try living abroad, to see what that would feel like.

Everything, and everyone, was wonderful, no complaints whatsoever!

A great place to stay

We liked everything here; it is an unusual hotel but absolutely excellent in every way. We could not find a single fault or suggestion where an improvement could be made.
If my wife and myself would have to pick out a special feature then it would be the quality and friendliness of the staff
