The Nines, Portland

525 Southwest Morrison, Portland, OR 97204, United States of America (show on map)

The Nines, a Luxury Collection Hotel, is a sophisticated urban retreat occupying the top nine floors of the historic Meier & Frank Building in downtown Portland. Originally built in 1909, this iconic terra cotta structure served as the flagship store for a legendary retail dynasty. In a fun historical twist, actor Clark Gable famously worked there as a young man before his Hollywood career took off.

The hotel’s name is a playful nod to the phrase “dressed to the nines,” honoring the building’s fashionable roots. Today, the property masterfully blends that history with modern, eco-friendly design. It is LEED Silver certified and features a dramatic seven-story atrium, more than 400 pieces of locally commissioned art, and even rooftop beehives. A standout feature is “The Library,” a cozy space tucked off the atrium where guests can relax with books sourced from the nearby, world-famous Powell’s City of Books.

You couldn’t ask for a better location for exploring the City of Roses. The hotel is situated right across from Pioneer Courthouse Square—often called Portland’s “living room”—and is within walking distance of the Portland Art Museum.

Beyond its stylish rooms, the hotel is home to two of the city’s most popular dining destinations: Departure, which offers modern Asian cuisine with stunning city views, and Urban Farmer, a farm-to-table steakhouse. Whether you are browsing the nearby Pearl District or heading out to explore the stunning natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, The Nines provides a glamorous, central home base.

Expert reviews

Fodors review:

“Located right in the center of downtown Portland and just steps from “Portland’s Living Room” Pioneer Courthouse Square, The Nines Hotel is an elegant, contemporary hotel located in the historic Meier and Frank Building.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Portland.

Frommers review:

“The Nines was created on the top nine floors of the old Meier & Frank department store, a Portland retail icon since the 1920s. Clark Gable worked here before he was a star, and the city’s first escalator graced the store. The Nines, as in “dressed to . . .” honors the defunct fashion emporium with panache.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Portland.

Forbes review:

“A luxurious spot in the center of downtown Portland, Oregon, The Nines, A Luxury Collection Hotel occupies the same historic building where Clark Gable once worked.”

Telegraph review:

“One of Portland’s leading luxury hotels, The Nines delivers modern glamour in a historic Portland building right in the centre of downtown’s best shopping. A LEED Silver Certified Hotel, it effortlessly mixes history, modern elegance and eco-consciousness.”

7/10 Stay. I would stay here again.

Pet friendly. $85 pet fee for the entire stay. I stayed two nights and paid $85. My dog (Female Shih Tzu) needed a grassy area to potty and there is a spot 4 blocks away. Dining/Bar/gym facilities in the hotel are very nice, no issues. Staff is very helpful, no issues with staff. Stuff to do during the day, surrounding area has food and shopping. Great location.

I was charged $300 for each charge to my room for room service. This is the first time at a hotel that this happened. My personal account was charged (temporarily) a total of $799.56 for three separate charges. I do not like my back account to be deducted for every charge to the room, other places it would charge what I paid for. I didn't like that the I could not control the air temperature in the room. The room has the control, but the hotel controls the temperature. I like to have the controls to circulate air in the room. The valet parking is $65 each night, with the option to retrieve your car in and out during the day. If you are here multiple days you pay that each night or be forced to find parking else where. I did not plan for parking fee's when i planned this trip, so beware.

I wouldn’t stay again but only because of front desk staff as I don’t trust they are compatent

The room was nice

They mismanaged my check in and double charged me for the room, it was irritating then they said I didn’t pre pay for the room but I did through booking. They simply didn’t handle things well

Mixed feelings

Great location in the center of Portland (but lots of homeless people and people using drugs out in the open in front). Beautiful decoration, very modern and tasteful. The room was really pretty and nice art throughout the hotel.

Arrival and entrance were a big disappointment. There was no way to park the car in front of the hotel as there are only 3 or 4 spots which were taken. So, we couldn't even drop our suitcases and had to park a few blocks away. Also, the hotel has no lobby, only a tiny hallway with an elevator. You have to go to the 8th floor and through corridors to find the lobby where the one woman behind the counter took all the time in the world to explain to other guests all the restaurants in town, while there was a concierge for that who had nothing to do... Also, the area outside the hotel has a lot of homeless people and people using drugs out in the open.

Passable

Liked the location, gym and the food was very good.

Does not live up to ‘The Nines’. Bathroom grout was very moldy. Over priced for value, staff is apathetic. They’re friendly with each other and miserable with customer, consistently!

Fantastic, will stay here again.

Location and staff made the price worth it. Everyone was friendly and quick to help. The room had fantastic views and was very clean. As for location, we were able to walk anywhere easily or it was a quick drive.

The restaurant on the lobby level. The staff was friendly but the food was not good. It's a pricey restaurant and the food was ok at best. Whatever you do, do not order the scallops. Rooftop restaurant was much better.

Over priced 100%. My next visit to Portland

Centralized location to downtown Portland.

Upgraded to higher floor which was an ADA room which had no closet space to hang clothes; instead it contained shelves. The in house restaurant (Urban Farmer) has terrible food and OP.

Great hotel, but do not trust the prices mentioned by the hotel restaurant.

Fantastic hotel, but with some fundamental shortcomings regarding pricing behaviour.

I really don't accept it if you cannot rely on prices which are communicated upfront. The restaurant charges more than the listed prices. Upon checking the bill, this seems to be explained with a sentence on the bottom of the menu stating "A 3% surcharge on your check represents our dedication to provide an award-winning work environment". Wow, really? Instead of including it in the costprice, I am paying for the work environment with extra charges? This behaviour is horrible and disrespectful to customers of the restaurant. Put fixed cost of YOUR workplace in your costprice and don't BS me with adding it afterwards under the disguise of "your" dedication... It's "only" 3%, but something I never agreed to. It is just scamming customers for more money and such behaviour of hotels and restaurants must be called out. This gives such a bad taste to the stay that I will never eat here again.

A lovely hotel in a fantastic location with small rooms.

Loved the vibe of the hotel. Common spaces were very nice, restaurant/bar did a fantastic job although the seating in the steak house seemed more like a Mariott courtyard happy hour venue than what one would expect in a steak house.

I didn't love the size of the room or the bed which appeared lumpy and a bit worse for wear. The mattress seemed at the end of it's life. In the bathroom, the shower door was very cloudy and needed a solid cleaning or replacement if it was uncleanable.

Everything and everyone was great except for parking charge and a minor issue with room service.

Beautiful facility - common areas, rooms, etc all top notch. Loved the library where we played pool.

The room service arrived 20 mins late and not very hot and was missing the toast. Otherwise it was very tasty. The parking fee was way too expensive. We parked at another property.
