Four Seasons Hotel at Sultanahmet, Istanbul
The Four Seasons Hotel at Sultanahmet is a masterclass in transformation. Housed in a stunning, century-old neoclassical building that was originally the Ottoman Empire’s first prison, it now serves as a luxurious boutique sanctuary. Even its former exercise yard has been reimagined into a peaceful, manicured courtyard, providing a tranquil escape from the bustling city.
The architecture itself is a historical gem designed by Mimar Kemaleddin Bey, a pioneer of the “First National Architecture” movement. Following a recent redesign by the studio Goddard Littlefair, the interiors now blend this rich history with modern elegance, featuring custom lighting and furnishings that pay homage to traditional Turkish patterns, such as the iconic Chintamani motif.
For history buffs, the building’s past is fascinating; it once held prominent political dissidents and writers, including the legendary poet Nazım Hikmet. The design team worked hard to preserve this integrity, incorporating original marble and stone elements throughout the hotel to ensure the building’s poignant story remains front and center.
The location is truly unbeatable for sightseeing. Situated in the heart of the Old City, you are just a short walk from Istanbul’s most iconic treasures, including the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern, and the sprawling Topkapı Palace.
After exploring, guests often head to the A’Ya Rooftop Lounge to enjoy a drink with a backdrop of the Hagia Sophia. Whether you’re soaking in the skyline or relaxing in the courtyard, the hotel offers a uniquely immersive experience in one of the world’s most historic neighborhoods.
Expert reviews
“What a rehabilitation success story: a former prison just steps from Topkapı Palace and Aya Sofya is now one of Istanbul’s premier accommodations, where rooms and suites are luxuriously outfitted and overlook the Sea of Marmara, the Old City, or a manicured interior courtyard.”
Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Istanbul.
“Built in Ottoman Turkish revival style at the end of World War I, what is today the Istanbul flagship of the upscale Four Seasons chain was originally built as a prison to house political dissidents.”
Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Istanbul.
“Built in 1918, this Four Seasons hotel is so unabashedly opulent you’d never guess it was Istanbul’s first prison. Its 65 rooms are individually decorated with opulent furnishings, handwoven kilim rugs and original Turkish artwork.”
“Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet is a posh escape. But before it was converted to a hotel in 1996, it was a less luxurious experience.Formerly a prison, the neoclassical building once housed oppositional political figures and dissident writers, including famed Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet.”
“This luxurious hotel is actually fashioned from a late-Ottoman era prison once used to incarcerate writers, artists and other dissidents, though it has been so brilliantly converted you’d never guess. Its location in the heart of the city means it’s a stone’s throw from many of Istanbul’s most famous sights.”

Overall, I wouldn't recommend staying at this hotel unless the terrace is open and the garden isn't having any p
The hotel has some great qualities – the staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay, the location is excellent, and the room itself was large and comfortable.
However, there were a few letdowns that impacted our experience. First, the terrace – which is one of the hotel’s main attractions and a big reason we booked – was shut, with no mention of this on the website. On our last day, we were hoping to relax and have breakfast in the garden, only to find it had been closed off for a private event, which we hadn’t been informed about in advance. Additionally, our room overlooked a building site, which isn't a very pretty sight. Finally, while guests are allowed to use the pool the Bosphorus hotel with a free shuttle, however the outdoor pool there is closed until June – another detail we wish we’d known earlier.

Excellent hotel in the middle of the most important sight seeing spots.
The hotel was an oasis in the middle of downtown Istanbul with a wonderful garden to relax and have some drinks. Everybody was very friendly and helpful. We had a very nice room with views to the courtyard. Remarkable is also the terrace on the top floor with direct view to the Hagia Sophia and really good drinks and bar food.
Nothing!

Excellent hotel in a perfect location.
It was a beautiful building and the rooms were stunning. Its location was perfect.
If I had anything to say it would be that the menu in the restaurant was quite limited.

Exceptional hotel, wonderful staff who could not have been more helpful and a perfect location.
We chose this location of the the Four Seasons Sultanahmet as it felt it to be a beautiful historical hotel and perfectly placed to be able to explore the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Grand Bazaar and more all within walking distance. The bedrooms had fantastic blinds to block out all light so one could sleep peacefully and the air con was set to a perfect temperature with no noise unlike other hotels who rarely get it right. Its central garden felt a haven of calm beauty for delicious breakfasts and evening dinners. The roof top bar was fun with great cocktails and a DJ doing an ambient vibe. We also loved hearing the call to prayer, the whole atmosphere was wonderful.
Everything was perfect. Could not fault it.

A gorgeous hotel in a great location
We love the boat transfer to the sister hotel on the Bosphorus. The height of luxury travel. Pool there was great.
I think more could be made of the roof top bar area. By 8.30pm, it was dead

An amazing hotel at an incredible location
This hotel was absolutely amazing. From location, to service, to comfort, absolutely everything was fantastic. The staff is really focused on the guest and will go the extra mile to help and make the guest feel at home.
Restaurant offer could be better - breakfast choices were fairly limited (including the buffet). Also, the on-site Avlu restaurant is fairly limited in their food choices for lunch/dinner, especially compared to what other hotels of this range in Istanbul offer (including Four Seasons at Bosporus).

The ideal 5 star hotel in Istanbul
This is a brilliant hotel situated right in the middle of the main Istanbul tourist attractions. It's very expensive but worth every penny for those who can afford it.
There was nothing to dislike.

Pleasant but inconvenient bec of the location
It's old cultural ambience, which was well preserved
The transport system was horrible getting too and fro from the hotel . You had to pay the taxis 500-800 tl even at times for a short trip. And hotel car would cost you 150 euros / trip

Beautiful hotel, lovely people and great location.
Breakfast was very good, good value for money. It was lovely to eat breakfast outside in the gardens. Nice and peaceful.
Could not have wished for a better stay. Staff were very accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. There was nothing I did not like.

Old luxury hotel that has great service but can do with upgrading or price revision
