Launched in 2017 as the iconic luxury brand’s very first overseas outpost, this 30-villa sanctuary sits dramatically atop a hill that plunges 170 meters down into the sacred Pakerisan River valley.
The resort’s unique layout is the brainchild of Japanese architect Rie Azuma, who spent months studying local villages and traditional craft workshops. Instead of building isolated private plunge pools or a loud, central infinity pool, Azuma ingeniously lined the villas along three 70-meter-long, canal-like swimming pools. This layout mimics the flow of a natural jungle stream and honors Bali’s communal spirit.
Water is truly the lifeblood of the property. The resort is woven directly into an ancient subak irrigation canal—a centuries-old, UNESCO-recognized system that distributes water to nearby rice paddies and temples. Landscape designer Hiroki Hasegawa carefully preserved this historic channel, ensuring the soothing melody of flowing water echoes throughout the grounds.
For the ultimate view, guests gather at Café Gazebo, a series of open-air lounges styled like birdcages that project directly out over the steep, mist-shrouded valley, making you feel as if you are floating effortlessly above the jungle canopy.

We enjoyed our stay at Hoshinoya and would love to come back someday.
Beautiful location set in the thick of the rainforest. The resort design and connection with the land is really well considered.
The dining options were decent overall, but the real highlight for us was being able to swim and enjoy the tranquility of the rainforest. The room itself was amazing - a perfect balance to of modern and traditional aspects.
