Expert reviews

Fodors review:

“The House of the Pomegranate is a sumptuously restored residence, with four stunning suites that showcase the work of Fez’s famous artisans in their carved cedarwood doors and lofty ceilings, mosaic tile floors, and intricate plasterwork.”

Lonely Planet review:

“Occupying a quiet spot against the northern walls, Dar Roumana is a beautiful restoration job with hard-to-beat views from its roof terrace. Uncommonly, three rooms have bathtubs, and a couple have external windows. The Yasmina suite, with its four-poster bed and balcony, is the pinnacle.”

All you need to know

In the late 19th century, Dar Roumana was established by the Arfaouis, a lineage involved in the olive oil trade. It served as a dwelling for numerous generations and even their farm animals.

Interestingly, it wasn’t until the oldest daughter’s wedding in 1923 that the inside courtyard was paved; before then, it was utilized as living space for donkeys and chickens. Initially, the property bore the name Dar Arfaoui until renovation commenced in 2002.

“Dar Roumana” translates to “house of the pomegranate”, paying tribute to the once abundant pomegranate trees that marked the surrounding lanes years ago and inspired the district’s name: Zkak Roumane. A handful of these trees are still visible overhanging the walls of the adjacent property.

The rooms exhibit the artistry of several generations of Fassi craftsmen, subtly augmented with contemporary elements.

Each of the five suites comes with 100% cotton sheets and feather comforters (hypo-allergenic versions can be provided upon demand), air conditioning (except in the Roumana suite), a personal safe, and a private bathroom – equipped with plush towels and cotton robes, a hair dryer, and exquisite organic toiletries.

While there are no televisions or phones, you need not worry – the Wifi connection ensures you remain linked to the world beyond.

Very good

The riad is beautiful, our room was very pretty, decorated with taste and typical furniture. The terrace is also nice, we enjoyed the sun up there. The only thing we were a bit disappointed with was the food: the dinner is too pricey for what it is, and the breakfast could definitely be better for what you pay to stay at this riad.

Lovely Riad in Fes

The room was huge with a double shower. he furnishings were also very nice. The room looked out onto the central court, as in many Riads. The manager arranged for a guided tour of Fes, which was very good. Breakfast was very good, as was the restaurant for dinner. This is important since Fes at night can be a bit shady.

At an extra cost we arranged a transfer to the train station for our departure. The driver did not show at the specified time and there was no one at the reception at the hotel. We were lucky to make our train. The menu for dinner was limited and unchanged for the two nights we were there.

Wonderful helpful staff at beautiful historic riad

Beautiful historic romantic. Dinner not too traditional; experimental twists. Really nice breakfast. Staff fantastic. Clean. Rather quiet.

The stairway to our bathroom was steep and narrow.

Beautiful old house in great location

Lovely big room with cute balcony. Staff were professional and kind. Fantastic location and area.

It felt a little bit dated and lacking a bit of enthusiasm. Restaurant was overpriced and overhyped. Staff were not very helpful or forthcoming with recommendations.

Comfortable stay in beautifully decorated Dar

Beautifully decorated room, lovely terrasse, clean, quiet, lovely restaurant

There was no possibility to make tea/coffee (or any other drink) in the evenings. Also no fridge in the room, or any possibility to get a drink anywhere else in the hotel. There is no café or shop nearby to buy drinks. This may be because it was low season (we were the only guests most of our stay)

Exceptional

We had an incredible stay at Dar Roumana. Our room and the terrace were so nice that we had to work to make ourselves go out and explore Fez rather than simply luxuriating at the Dar. The staff also made us feel incredibly welcome, whether that was by bringing us lettuce along with our breakfast so that we could feed the tortoise or lighting a fire in the lounge when we were there working.

A beautifully appointed Riad (but the stairs are very steep).

The restaurant served delicious evening meals. The breakfast was very good. Staff were very welcoming and helpful. The Riad is beautifully restored in traditional Moroccan style. The bed was first class.

At our age ( over 70) the flights of stairs to reach the rooms were punishing. But there is no solution to this problem as the Riad is designed around the central courtyard with steep stairs to all upper areas.

Nice

Riad was very beautiful and my room too, lots of room there. And a view from the roofbalcony was exceptional. Reception was polite and formal. Breakfast was so good and served with lovely lady. Lots of deep steps there to room, to balcony even inside your room you need to take steps to go to bathroom. So cannot recommended to people with knee problems.

Morocco in all it’s Beauty

The property was just BEAUTIFUL! The staff was exceptional with a lot of “old world charm”! Have dinner there at least 1 night! It was delicious. The only downside is that our room was up a steep, winding staircase. If the stairs don’t bother you, stay here!

Amazing! Would highly recommend.

The staff were awesome - special shout out to Mohammad and Rachid who went the extra step to ensure we had a great stay. The court yard was absolutely beautiful, our room was equally as beautiful and the roof top terrace was our favourite!

Fabulous

Beautiful decor, great restaurant on site and roof top vista. If you like restoration projects Dar Roumana comes with its own story book in the lobby.

Empty lot behind the Dar where dogs barked during the night. We were double booked and it took a little effort to confirm the same quality accommodation near by, but it worked out.

A wonderful experience.

This is an exceptional property in Fes. It’s in a great location and has been beautifully renovated – with lots of love, care and attention to detail. All of the staff are incredibly friendly, welcoming and very professional. The quality and choice of food created in the Riad is of a very high standard and probably the best we experienced during our 2-week road trip around Morocco. We whole heartedly recommend this Riad - it ticks all the boxes!

Perfect traditional place to stay from where you reach everything of the medina by foot

We loved this place so much with his traditional furnishing and very friendly service. The hotel is well located and you can reach everything in the 'medina' (old city) by food. Our room was extraordinary with his bathroom in the second floor. Also the roof terrace is so delightful, you have a perfect view about the old part of the city.

Amazing and unforgettable place

It was a 10/10 place. Staff was helpful and friendly. Our Tamarind room had plenty of space, an amazing bathroom with double shower and perfect views to the Riad. The architecture and decoration is just stunning. Totally recommend Dar Roumana. Delicious breakfast served at the rooftop which gives you a great panoramic view of the Medina and the Meneries tombs. Special mention to Nesha at reception who also does Henna tattoos.

It would be good to have more food options beside the set menu, as maybe you’re not hungry but you have to order the whole 2 dishes menu but nothing bad. Food was great.

Sumptious accommodation but pack earplugs

Dar Roumana is situated in a beautiful old Riad. The interior is stunning and our room was equally beautiful and well thought through. Great attention to detail with high % cotton sheets and comfy bed. Service for breakfast on the terrace was impeccable. We also had dinner here on our first night which was amazing. We later discovered that it is considered one of the best places to eat in Fes.

Our room (Argana?) was situated on the external wall and overlooked some waste ground. Not sure anything can be done about it but it was very noisy. Noisy from diners in the internal courtyard until about 11 then a procession of dogs barking, donkeys neighing, cockerels. Earplugs advised.

I felt like a Moroccan princess staying at Dar Roumana.

The rooms are authentic, stunning and comfortable. Its a great place to escape the busy Medina. Then staff is so kind and friendly and helped me book a guide among other things I needed. For me as a solo female traveler it can be hard being alone but the staff made me feel so welcomed and made it feel like home here. I loved it so much I booked two extra nights.

It’s on the outskirts of the Medina so it was a little difficult to find my way back from the Medina.

Staying here is an exciting and relaxing experience

This is an excellent location on the edge of the Medina, away from the crowds and not too far from the city gates and car park. The staff were excellent; the breakfasts, taken in the main courtyard, were relaxed and enjoyable. The whole riad, particularly the tiles, woodwork and stucco has been beautifully and sensitively restored to its former glory. The roof terrace affords wonderful views across the medina. The room we stayed in was spacious, beautifully decorated and very comfortable.

One of the most perfect hotels we've ever stayed in.

Fabulous. In a late 19th/early 20th century courtyard house with amazing tiling and stucco work. Excellent breakfast was served in the courtyard (with tortoise). Very good restaurant (licensed), deservedly popular with non-residents (we ate there twice). Lovely room, though steep stairs to the beautiful shower room. Wonderful roof terrace with superb views over Fez where the very helpful staff will serve you complementary tea and a billable drink.

Nothing could have been better but it is just a little off the beaten track so can take a litte finding even when you think you know where you are going

You could not ask for a more convenient, comfortable, or beautiful base from which to explore Fes.

I liked practically everything about this beautiful riad, from big stuff like the roof terrace to the wonderful breakfast to little details like their great taste in music. Just seeing the wood- and tilework in the courtyard is a treat. The location is perfect, too. It's easy to reach by taxi — about a 5 minute walk into the old city from the nearest dropoff — while also giving you access to several convenient routes into the centre of the medina. Spectacular views. Friendly tortoise.

I'm pretty sure this is only a problem for the room we booked (the cheapest double room), but its one window faces the waste ground between the medina and old northern wall, which happens to be the territory of a huge number of stray dogs. I grew up with dogs and love them, and these are not at all dangerous, but they are quite social and love to chat with their friends all night long. Pack earplugs!

An unforgettable stay at Dar Roumana!

In all of our travels, this was easily the most beautiful place my partner and I have ever stayed in. I have never seen such gorgeous craftsmanship in a hotel before - Dar Roumana has managed to retain every bit of the traditional charm of the restored building (tile, woodwork, intricately carved plaster), while making sure it has every convenience one could hope for. More importantly, the staff are incredibly kind, hospitable, and accommodating. We were traveling for the first time with our baby, and everyone who worked there was so warm and sweet with him. The cooking at the restaurant and at breakfast is outstanding, with very refined takes on Moroccan dishes and flavors. The location at the edge of the medina is great, too. It was just a short walk to the most vibrant and energetic parts of the medina, while still being calm and quiet inside. I really couldn't recommend Dar Roumana more - if one of their few rooms is free during your visit to Fes, you've got to book it. Thanks again to all of the staff for a fantastic stay!

We truly loved everything!

Favorite Hotel

Excellent reception upon arrival. We arrived late and they let us have dinner while they checked us in. This is a beautiful hotel with an excellent restaurant and very attentive staff. I highly recommend this hotel. Parking is outside the walls of the old city but the hotel sent someone with a cart to help us with our bags and to show us the way. We had a very large room with traditional tile throughout that overlooked the interior covered courtyard (Dar) which is where the restaurant is located. It is a quiet, very peaceful place. We loved it!

We loved it all!

Stepping in back in time and treated like a Sultan

A beautiful riad, located in a quiet area of the old city. Very helpful team who sent directions, arranged to meet us at the parking and took our luggage to the riad. They arranged a guide for us and were well informed and ready to share interesting anecdotes about the city. Our room was comfortable and cool. Lots of stairs so only suitable if you are reasonably fit. A very nice breakfast.

Amazing, one of the best places I have stayed so far.

Amazing place to stay in Fes. Beautiful building, nice and individually designed rooms that were very clean, super friendly staff. Amazing view from the roof top terrace overlooking Fes Medina.

There is nothing to be critised, I only suggest to make more use of the roof top terrace, especially at night time. E.g. by playing some music and actively serving guests with drinks and small snacks.

Very nice experience in the Medina.

Fantastic location, north end of the Medina. Bfast was sumptuous and included Moroccan and European selections. Dinner was fantastic, along with great selection of local wines from Meknes. Staff was super. Rooftop was magnificent, and made for a memorable visit enjoying a glass of Chardonnay.

Dogs barking in the middle of the night. Not sure what the Riad can do about it, but did keep me awake a bit.

Superb! A Gem in the Fez Medina and more than worth the price!

Dar Roumana is exquisite. A really beautiful property in the Fez Medina, with a caring, and very friendly and attentive staff. The rooms are amazing (there are only 4 of them) with luxurious bathrooms. There are lovely seating areas, a spacious roof terrace, and an excellent restaurant (alcohol is served!). The food was excellent. In general, the staff were really wonderful and obliging, and the attention to detail, exceptional. I would recommend this highly and enthusiastically to all. Considering other "high-end" properties available, Dar Roumana easily matches (and surpasses) places that cost double what DR does,

Nothing. But there are general things a visitor should know: Dar Roumana's location is towards the outer area/part of the Medina. The plus is that this makes it quiet and serene at night; but folks should realize that you're 5-10 minute walk from the central hustle and bustle (to me this is a plus!) As with all Riads that I've stayed in, Dar Roumana's layout means that rooms come with a fair amount of stairs to be climbed. If climbing stairs is an issue, you may want to stay away from every and all Riads and lodge in a commercial property like a hotel. I visited in the height of summer. The only thing that DR lacked that would have been amazing was a small pool. But this is not something I "didn't like" merely an observation about what might have made a truly amazing stay event more so.

This place lives up to its reputation!

Food was the best in the Medina and the place is a gorgeously restored home with very large and well decorated rooms. The staff was so kind and attentive- even more so than La Mamounia! They even have a pet turtle that lives there :) be ware of the scams in the Medina- the hotel will help explain what to look out for to avoid getting hustled.

Beautiful room

Amazing room, very impressive little boutique hotel with good restaurant. Breakfast was super tasty, but the best part was the little balcony in our suite, the best place for mint tea and a book!

Some of the male staff at reception were rather unfriendly and unaccommodating. The female personal, on the other hand, were outstanding and made us feel very welcomed.
