Penn’s View Hotel, Philadelphia

14 N Front St, Philadelphia, PA 19106, United States (show on map)

Penn’s View Hotel is a delightful boutique property located right in the heart of Philadelphia’s historic Old City. The building itself dates back to 1828, having originally served as a shipping warehouse before evolving into a hardware store and later a coffee house. In 1989, the Sena family took on the mission of transforming this piece of industrial history into the elegant, European-style hotel that visitors enjoy today.

The hotel features 49 uniquely appointed rooms, many of which showcase charming architectural details like exposed brick walls and traditional fireplaces. If you are looking for extra relaxation, certain suites even include jetted spa tubs. The property also boasts a distinct old-world ambiance that feels both grounded in local history and genuinely welcoming.

A major highlight of the hotel is its on-site Italian restaurant, Panorama. It is famous for more than just its pasta; it holds a Guinness World Record for its custom-built wine dispensing system, which features over 120 wines available by the glass. It’s a perfect spot for oenophiles to enjoy a tasting in a sophisticated setting.

Its location is ideal for history enthusiasts. You can easily stroll to iconic landmarks like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, or take a quick walk to explore the cobblestone charm of Elfreth’s Alley, the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in the country. With the Delaware River waterfront just moments away, the hotel provides a seamless base for experiencing the best of Philadelphia’s past and present.

Expert reviews

Telegraph review:

“The 51-room Penn’s View Hotel has long been popular, thanks to its views over the Delaware River, and ownership of one of Philadelphia’s favourite Italian restaurants. Major attractions, such as Independence Hall and the hip and happening Old City, are just a 10-minute walk away.”

Fodors review:

“This cosmopolitan little hotel in a refurbished 19th-century commercial building on the fringe of Old City offers its own brand of urban charm. The owner is a well-regarded Italian-born restaurateur who also runs Ristorante Panorama, the downstairs eatery, and its wine bar, a Guinness World Records holder for its 120-bottle cruvinet system (they pour more than 150 wines by the glass).”

Highly recommend. Excellent old hotel with charm and location can't be beat.

Great Location - was an easy walk to downtown and historic district. Many great places to eat close by. Clean and friendly staff. Great views.

You will have to use a nearby lot if you are parking a car but that wasn't a big deal.

Charming but lacking a few things

We appreciated the vintage charm of the hotel in general. The room was spacious, neat and clean. I appreciated having a bath tub, although there were no towel racks in the bathroom (there were 2 hooks on the door). The location was very good/walkable for accessing many of the attractions, historical sites and getting to the Hop On/Hop Off which we used for two days. The bar was very welcoming and we did attend Happy Hour for 2 of the 3 days we stayed. Alex is the epitome of a fantastic bartender and he made our time in the bar very enjoyable and fun. We loved the lemon ice water available in the lobby!

The Booking site indicated there was a safe in the room which unless it was completely hidden, there was not one. We counted on using one for the 3 days. It also indicated there was breakfast included. A small muffin and coffee does not constitute breakfast or even a continental breakfast. If there was no coffee pot in the room, not having coffee until 7:00 am. is not appreciated for either travelers or getting out to an excursion on time. The view out our room on the 4th floor was looking at brick walls. And the steps coming into the hotel which was the only way to enter, were steep. We had to lug our large suitcases/bags up them, with no offer of help. Without having a small cafe or casual restaurant on site for either breakfast or a quick snack, it was not easy to find either near the hotel without a car or being familiar with the city. The noise from the freeway was fairly constant and quite loud. I believe for about $240 per night, we could have expected a little more.

Clean and comfortable small hotel.

Good location on the edge of the historic district, a 10 min. walk to Independence Hall. Spacious room, comfortable king bed, bathroom with jacuzzi tub, very clean, quiet.

The parking situation needs to be addressed. Valet parking is the only comfortable option - at $65 overnight plus mandatory credit card “convenience” fee plus tips, it is too expensive. All that came to $90. The hotel should make an arrangement with the surface parking lot next door and the valet.

I plan to stay at Penn's View any time I visit Philadelphia!

Hotel staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. The ambience of the hotel was very warm, comforting, and felt luxurious without a luxurious price. The room was very comfortable and had a very cozy appearance.

Having to pay to park at a hotel I'm already paying for, when there's little to no other parking options felt like I was being played for more money.

A step back into history.

The history surrounding this hotel is astonishing. It was like "stepping into history", but with all of the modern conveniences one expects to have.

The card to enter and exit the parking garage didn't work when we tried to exit. We finally were able to get someone who knew how to open the device and get the bar to lift, allowing us to depart the parking garage.

I’m so glad I found this place

Cozy European style hotel, with friendly people at the front desk. The decor is Early American, appropriately. The restaurant is excellent, with an extensive list of wines.

Breakfast not available. Coffee only, and sweet rolls. The concierge got me hot water to make tea, as I always carry tea bags just in case.

peaceful, quiet, clean, exceptional, romantic our words I would use to sum up my stay

The location was perfect right on Penns Landing and if you have a good view or a balcony, you can see the river.

The only complaints I have about my say is one staff staff member that ended up ruining our stay into the next night because we were in between switching rooms and they did not want to hold our luggage in the meantime. Communication was terrible due to a language barrier. It was a black female and she ended up telling us that we couldn’t book a room that night because none were available even though there were. George Roberto everyone else was exceptional and if it weren’t for her, I would write this a five stars.
