Lonely Planet review:

“With its wraparound porch, Corinthian columns and commanding perch on Judge’s Hill, this stately building is hands-down the most photogenic inn in town. Visually striking Texas modernist artwork adorns the walls in both rooms and common areas, setting this new boutique hotel apart from its competitors.”

Fodors review:

“Historical elegance and modern amenities converge in this 47-room boutique hotel, formerly Mansion on Judges’ Hill, which reopened in 2013 after an extensive renovation and ownership change. The Goodall Wooten mansion, a Texas Historic Landmark completed in 1900 on the south edge of UT campus, still shines in all its Classical Revival glory.”

Frommers review:

“Along with its prime location in an area with a dearth of lodgings, Hotel Ella is known for its casual-chic restaurant, attentive service, and gorgeous Greek Revival architecture; the house was built in 1900 for Goodall Wooten and his new wife, the former Ella Newsome.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Austin.

Telegraph review:

“One of Austin’s most gracious historic landmarks, a stay at Hotel Ella allows guests to step back in time to the life of a wealthy turn-of-the-19th-century family. The estate retains its timeless elegance with a thoroughly updated restoration and amenities that bring it into the modern day.”

All you need to know

Hotel Ella carries the name of a woman, akin to a traditional sailing ship. Inspired by Ella Wooten, who resided at this location from 1900 until 1944, she is the namesake of this establishment.

Known for her impeccable style, gifted gardening abilities, and refined interior design taste, she was married to one of the University of Texas’ founders. She invested generously in transforming an otherwise unremarkable property close to the university into a lavish Greek Revival-style building in 1910.

Over a hundred years later, her cherished undertaking was revamped and reopened as an upscale boutique hotel.

Hotel Ella, viewed externally, retains its historical charm with its two-story stone edifice and grand colonnaded verandas. However, the interiors have been significantly altered. What were once parlors and boudoirs are now transformed into 37 guest chambers and ten suites.

These spaces are fairly typical in shape and dimensions, but the beauty lies in the exquisite workmanship. The interiors are adorned with robust and opulent materials that resonate with the epoch that influenced the establishment: desks with granite tops, towels made of combed cotton, and bath essentials by the Vintage Round Top.

A minibar filled with locally-sourced gourmet items – a delightful and welcoming feature that Ella would likely appreciate – is also available, along with a 47-inch LED screen, something Ella couldn’t have possibly known about.

Suites come with bespoke furnishings and quaint personal patios; the premier Mansion Petite Suite is situated on a section of the mansion’s extensive veranda. It’s unlikely to find a more nostalgically appealing spot to unwind with a mint julep or a glass of iced tea.

Loved it and it’s location.

I like that it offers a different experience as a boutique hotel.

It’s a small hotel since it’s in an old mansion, so the rooms can feel small. They could update their gym equipment as well.

Good location, tastefully decorated and clean.

The overall feel of the hotel

No laundry service. I queried with the staff who had no idea, the receptionist was new and asked the person from the restaurant who said they would find out. No-one got back to me, so when I got back that evening, I went to follow up and new people were there who also didn't know the answer. Very noisy airconditioner

NIce historic hotel walkable to UT but watch out for overcharges and check you bill before you leave

We stayed here when my daughter was at UT Orientation. It is a great location walking distance from campus with very nice decor, comfy bed and clean room. We enjoyed the historic aspect of the main hotel and had tasty drinks and appetizers in the bar one night. I swam in the pool one afternoon and there was bar service available poolside if you like. The pool is tiny but nice to cool off in and has nice fountains and in Austin it is so hot so it was a welcome amenity.

I booked through Hotel Ella's website which directs you to Booking.com. Per my booking.com reservation, I received an email with the quoted prices including pricing of $25 per night for valet parking. It noted the total price did not include 17% tax or a resort fee of 6%. When I got my receipt via email long after we had left the hotel, I noticed I was overcharged for both parking and resort fees. It took 3 phone call and 2 emails to finally get someone to refund the overcharge and I only noticed the credit on my credit card account as no one from the hotel ever responded via email or phone. They also didn't refund the entire overcharge, and offered no explanation or apology.

Excellent hotel at a historic and artsy building

Great location, the building is historic and very interesting, the rooms are large. The beds and comforters were very good. The staff was very pleasant and helpful every time I spoke to them.

The room we stayed in had large square footage, which was used weirdly inefficiently - a tiny bathroom with a huge empty anteroom, for example. A table and a couple of chairs would also fit nicely in this room but there was no table.

A memorable mansion

Hotel Ella is in a beautiful mansion with porch and pillars. Still, it is very centrally located (10 min walk from UT Campus). I was lucky to have a room in the main building (I'm sure the other buildings are nice, too, but it just felt special to be in the mansion). The room was spacious enough, features a spacious closet, and the bathroom with the huge shower was amazing. Thanks to the weather I was able to sit on the porch with a complimentary cup of coffee. I had breakfast four times, and everything was delicious. I highly recommend the crab cakes. Service was very professional and friendly. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

I don't have any serious complaints. For me personally, it was just a bit inconvenient that the room did not feature a desk or chair. Moreover, it just so happened that there were private parties in the restaurant two evenings. This by itself was not a problem, but it would have been good to know in advance, as I would have liked to have dinner once in the restaurant, but the bar as well as the restaurant were closed to the public these evenings.

Fabulous

Location and great bed. Staff was Friendly and helpful.

The bar was comfortable and cozy. However, the bartender made horrible drinks that tasted nothing like what was ordered. Almost undrinkable.

loved the room. but sick and tired of having no access to bar/barista

we love Ella. great location. great rooms and comfortable and because we have stayed there over 30 times, we are familiar with it all.

We love the bar at night -for drinks- and the bar in the morning -for a cappuccino - so we can relax at the beautiful hotel and porch at a price higher than most other hotels, and it feels like “our place”. BUT the last 5 or six times the bar has been closed by 5:00 pm and this past weekend we looked forward to a cappuccino BUT the bar/coffee shop was closed. no real response. just that rhe barista wasn’t there or they were closed or something. For a hotel to be full service, and to charge what Ella charges, it is simply necessary that these small services for your GUESTS are available. Otherwise, it is just bad service.

Beautiful, historic, boutique hotel with a boutique price

beautiful hotel and pool; beautiful artwork; charming setting; lovely veranda to sit on

I knew it was expensive but the $25 “amenity fee” for absolutely nothing special in terms of amenities seems ridiculous, while the $40 valet parking (which is the sole option) felt a bit like price gouging. Also, no one even offered to show us to our room or help with bags. Id like a bit more service with the luxury fee.

An Oasis in central Austin - shame you have to pay for parking & breakfast

Great location and good 1st visual impression in the lovely old building. Our room however was in the modern extension and was pretty small & grotty facing a wall. Quick chat with very helpful staff & we had a much nicer room with little outside area leading straight onto the pool area which was a little oasis. Really enjoyed a few days here chilling out by the pool after a road trip. Very comfy bed & good albeit quite noisy ac

As above 1st room was pretty awful but moved to a much nicer one without much difficulty. $39 per day for valet parking was a bit annoying esp and my son arrived in a second car and the undercover parking was almost empty. Breakfast not included & actually quite a few things on the menu were not available. Moral of the tale make sure you get a nice room and be prepared to by fleeced to park your car

Very good

The hotel was very good. We arrived about noon and the staff said there were no clean rooms ready. We said, no problem we'll grab lunch and do a bit of sight seeing. The staff asked for my cell number and said they would give me a call when a room became available. I never got a call from them, so I called them a little after 3:00 pm. They said that our room was ready and we could come back and check in right away. When we got to the room given to us it had not been cleaned. we were moved to a new room right away but that felt like the staff didn't really pay attention to the details they were promoting.

A beautiful place in a great location but too expensive for what you get

I love the feel of the property, location and staff are so friendly and helpful

I was really dissatisfied by the lack of options for snacks and food offered in the restaurant and no coffee in the room or even free coffee in the lobby is not good. I don’t think I should have to pay for a coffee in the bar as a guest. having an extra extra charge or resort fee is also inappropriate especially when the facilities are closed for a wedding. That was very disappointing! I have loved Ella but the cost of add ons will have me looking god another option the next time I come to Austin

I thought it was a little pricey, but the ACL Music Festival was happening, and it was the best deal for the weekend.

Exceptional

the hotel and staff were fantastic, the hotel had a gas leak so there was no hot water and the restaurant couldn't open. when we checked out the nxt morning, the manager had waived any charges incurred at the hotel, ie our parking and breakfast. we thought this was so nice and kind of him. we would stay here again.

the location wasn't bad but was a bit of a way out, we were at the end of a 2 week holiday and just wanted to stay local, as the restaurant was closed at the hotel, we were limited for what to eat. apart from that, loved it.

ok

Location was great.

WiFi was VERY important to our stay. I confirmed reliability of the WiFi with the hotel before arrival only to have the WiFi "down" for most of the day when I really needed it. I had to leave and find other services. Air Conditioning was also either freezing or hot.
