From Chagford Church take the signed Postbridge road and after approximately ½ mile turn off right at a signpost which points to “Meldon Common”. Proceed uphill and turn right at a ‘T’ junction. Continue up hill until the brow is reached where there is parking for several cars on the left hand side. This is the starting place for the half mile (at most) stroll to the box.
From the parking place, cross the road and walk up the obvious wide grass track for approximately 600 paces to the trig point at the summit of the rock mass prominent on the skyline. From the trig point walk along the level crest of Meldon Hill in an easterly direction for 80 paces to an obvious outcrop whence there is a splendid view of Chagford.
Adjacent to the outcrop is a massive black earthbound rock “floor” from the middle of which walk approximately 50 paces on a bearing of 150° toward the distant twin skyline peaks of Haytor. The box is under the corner “nose” of a 10ft long flattish boulder and tucked well back. Another boulder of similar size with a knobbly top is 3 paces away. Both boulders are in an area of gorse.
The box is a battleship grey plastic pharmaceutical pillpot 5” long x 3” diameter. Be sure to take an inkpad and postcard so that you can take away an impression of the stamp! Also, a pen for recording in the book name, date of visit and any comments.
Good hunting and please ensure before leaving the site that the box is hidden from view and the lid is tightly closed.
